The software that will be used to count votes in the upcoming municipal elections is still not safe. Hackers can use the vulnerable software to influence the election results, experts that examined the software told RTL Nieuws.

Ethical hacker Sijmen Ruwhof discovered more than 50 vulnerabilities in the software. He calls ten of them 'high risk'.

Mayor Wil Houben of Voerendaal was threatened with a firearm two weeks ago, the Public Prosecutor confirmed to NOS after reports in De Limburger.

Houben was driving on the outskirts of the town when a man wearing a balaclava stepped into the road and pointed a gun at him. "It was almost surreal", the mayor said to De Limburger. "Out of nowhere there was someone with a balaclava and a handgun in front of my car holding me at gunpoint. He came closer and closer. Then you know instinctively that something is very wrong. My mind said 'drive', and my body did its job."

GroenLinks parliamentarian Kathalijne Buitenweg called on Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs to explain why French Islam critic Zineb El Rhazoui was refused protection for her talk in De Balie in Amsterdam on Thursday, RTL Nieuws reports.

El Rhazoui worked at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo when a terrorist attack on the magazine killed twelve people in 2015. Since then she's been the target of numerous death threats, and is therefore under intense security in her own country.

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, wants to get rid of the European Commission's task force against spreading fake news, the so-called EUvsDisinfo. This follows the task force naming a number of Dutch news services as spreaders of fake news, Het Parool reports.

The Dutch news services involved are NPO Radio 1, the Gelderlander, GeenStijl and The Post Online. According to the task force, pro-Russian propaganda gained the upper hand in a few reports from these organizations.

The Public Prosecutor will not prosecute Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs for slander and defamation. FvD leader Thierry Baudet pressed charges against the Minister last month, but the Public Prosecutor determined that she committed no criminal offenses, the Prosecutor announced on Thursday.

A majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, voted for abolishing the advisory referendum on Thursday. With 76 votes for and 69 votes against, the law that arranges the abolition was adopted, NOS reports.

Every parliamentarian voted individually on the law to abolish the referendum, as well as motions made by opposition parties.

"My personal opinion: as far as I'm concerned she should hang on the highest tree", he wrote on Facebook. The Minister is still considering whether to take further steps against him, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Netherlands is taking over the governing of Sint Eustatius, an island that forms part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, State Secretary Raymond Knops of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations announced on Monday. This decision was made based on a report from a committee that investigated the state of the island and concluded that there is a "gross neglect of duties" on Sint Eustatius.

People protesting for keeping Zwarte Piet in blackface makeup, also have to comply with the law, State Secretary Raymond Knops of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations said in WNL on Sunday. He was referring to a group of people blocking anti-Zwarte Piet protesters from reaching the Sinterklaas parade in Dokkum on Saturday, where they had permission to protest against racism.

"I understand the emotions on this subject, but I cannot approve of people stopping everything on a highway," Knops said. "Everyone must abide by the law, including these people."

The Tweede Kamer is shocked and outraged by reports from Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations that Russia and other countries are using fake news to try and influence public opinion in the Netherlands. "That fake accounts influence our democracy is life threateningly dangerous", CDA leader Sybrand Buma said to broadcaster NOS. The CDA and D66 are presenting a set of measures in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, on Wednesday to prevent this from happening.
