Dutch people are increasingly frustrated by their noisy neighbors. The number of noise complaints caused by neighbors increased by 10 percent over the past three years, the Volkskrant reports based on its analysis of 500 thousand noise complaints filed with the police between 2014 and 2017.

Noise complaints from neighbors make up the lion 's share of all noise complaints filed with the police, according to the newspaper. The Dutch mainly complain about loud music in their neighbor's home or during garden parties and noise nuisance on the balcony.

Health insurer Menzis will now pay for depression treatments based on result, instead of on the number of treatments. The insurer signed a contract on this new approach with 18 mental health institutions. This involves treatments that last for less than a year, for patients who do not have chronic depression, NOS reports.

The father of the 26-year-old Syrian man who was shot by the police after waving an ax on his Schiedam balcony last week Wednesday and passed away on Monday, asked "time and again" that his son be admitted to a psychiatric hospital, the family's lawyer Karen Kort said to NU.nl. The father contacted "multiple agencies" to find help for his son, the lawyer said.

More than 40 percent of Syrian refugees in te Netherlands have psychological problems like depression and anxiety, according to a study by social and cultural planning office SCP. Despite these problems, they make little use of mental health care. The SCP spoke to 44 thousand Syrians who were given refugee status in the Netherlands between January 2014 and July 2016, ANP reports.

The mental healthcare sector in the Netherlands is struggling to find enough qualified staff, according to an annual survey of the sector by Intrakoop and accountant Verstegen. The total number of vacancies in the sector grew by a massive 28.5 percent last year to 5,151, newspaper AD reports. 

Almost a thousand of the vacancies were difficult to fill, according to the report. The total 186 mental healthcare organizations in the Netherlands are good for around 64 thousand full-time jobs, the researchers estimate.

The Netherlands' healthcare system is the best in Europe, according to the annual index by Swedish Health Consumer Powerhouse. The Netherlands has been number in Europe on this index since 2008, the Telegraaf reports.

Powerhouse compares accessibility, cost, treatment outcome and use of medicine for their ranking. This year the Netherlands scored 927 out of the possible 1,000 points. Improvements were seen in shorter waiting lists.

Nearly half of the people suffering from mental health problems in the Netherlands do not make use of medicine or health care, according to a survey by the national platform for mental health GGz and the Dutch federation for patients Ieder(in) published on Monday. The survey among more than 10 thousand patients found that high costs is the main reason for patients to avoid being treated, Trouw reports.

This survey reveals a sharp contrast between mental health care and physical health care - about a third of people with physical health problems don't go for treatment.

Disturbed people who pose a threat to themselves or others are more often sent directly for treatment, instead of ending up in a police cell. In 30 percent of the cases the person is taken directly to a mental health institution, Henk van Dijk, chairman of the national platform mental health at the police, said to the Volkskrant on Monday.

General Practitioners are increasingly treating people with serious psychological or psychiatric problems themselves. This is because referral to specialist care often does not work or is very difficult after the budget cuts for mental health.

Opposition parties D66 and ChristenUnie wants mental health care to be free for all children. According to these parties, the government may not ask for a contribution as long as there is an investigation ongoing.

Since the cut backs in mental healthcare (GGZ) in 2012, the waiting lists have grown, causing the gravity of psychological stress to increase and more emergency admissions to occur.
