May school holidays

Traffic information service ANWB expects heavy traffic on Dutch roads on Friday afternoon as the May school holidays begin for primary and secondary schools across the country, AD reports.

The ANWB expects that most people who are vacationing in the Netherlands will leave for their destinations today. Roads to recreation areas in the middle and south of the Netherlands are expected to be especially busy. "Traffic jams are most likely on the highways around Amersfoort (A1, A28), the A12 from Utrecht to Arnhem and the roads to the Holland- and Zeeland coast", ANWB warns.

State Secretary Sander Dekker of Education is investigating the possibility of synchronizing May school holidays nation wide. He wants a fixed, 14 day May holiday that happens in the same two weeks for all schools in the Netherlands. According to him, many parents complain about the chaos surrounding the May holidays, which makes it difficult to arrange care for their children and going on vacation.
