Airlines in the Netherlands, conservationists and community organizations fear a half billion euro fiasco from the plans for Lelystad Airport.
Schiphol airport reports a healthy growth in the number of passengers traveling through the airport. In the first half of this year, there was a four percent growth compared to the same period last year, with 25.7 million people coming through the airport.
The aviation sector is voicing resistance against the plans to expand Lelystad's airport to accommodate budget and holiday traffic. KLM's top is also openly against the ideas for this regional airport.
Lelystad Airport is getting permission to expand. State Secretary of Aviation Wilma Mansveld will report this to Council of Ministers on Friday.
Schiphol is putting €90 million into an entirely new airport in Lelystad, which will serve to help lessen the congestion at the main airport.
