A major signal interruption in the Randstad means that no train traffic is possible to and from The Hague Central Station. Passengers have been stuck on a train near the station for over an hour, according to AD. 

The disruption is also causing delays and problems in the rest of the Randstad region, according to NS. Train traffic to and from Leiden Central Station is also at a standstill. And no Intercity-direct trains are traveling on the HSL route between Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The police made three new arrests in the investigation into the kidnapping of a 37-year-old Rotterdam man in Amstelveen in March. They will be arraigned on Friday, AT5 reports.

A 29-year-old man previously arrested in this case appeared in court on Friday morning. During the hearing it was revealed that the kidnappers wanted a million euros in ransom. The victim had one hour to arrange the money. "Otherwise something would happen to his wife and children", the prosecutor said.

A Leiden student received the fright of her life on Sunday morning when a stranger came into her room and crawled into bed with her. She woke up when the strange man, dressed only in his underwear, opened her door in a student house on Pelikaanhof, Sleutelstad reports.

The young woman jumped out of bed and ran to her housemates for help. Despite prods, pushes and a glass of water in the face, the seemingly drunk man would not wake up. So the young women called the police.

The police had a breakthrough in the case of a Rotterdam man being kidnapped in Amstelveen earlier this year. Investigators found the house where the man was held hostage on Spaarnestraat in Leiden, the police announced on Thursday. The house has been thoroughly searched and the police expect to make arrests soon, NU.nl reports.

A massive 73 percent of students in the Netherlands pay too much in rent, according to a study by national student union LSVb. On average student rents are 55 euros per month higher than allowed by the property valuation point system. Amsterdam students are worst off - 80 percent pay an average of 115 euros too much rent per month, ANP reports.

The Dutch municipalities of Leiden, The Hague, Deventer, Groningen and Breda are all establishing a Children's Council in which the aldermen of these cities will actively work with the recommendations of kids. Princess Laurentien of the Missing Chapter Foundation and State Secretary Jetta Klijnsma of Social Affairs will kick off the test run for the Children's Councils on Tuesday, ANP reports.

The perpetrators who kidnapped a 37-year-old Rotterdam man in Amstelveen last month, cut off one of his fingers, the police announced on Tuesday. The case will be discussed on Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday evening, RTL Nieuws reports.

On March 9th masked men dragged the Rotterdam man out of his car in a parking lot in Amstelveen, forced him into another car and drove off with him. Later that night he was found wounded on a street in Leiden.

Commuters trying to navigate the Amsterdam area were advised to allow for plenty of extra time if using the highways on Monday evening after a fire in a Schiphol Tunnel passageway led to the closure of both the tunnel and the southbound A4 motorway towards Den Haag. Drivers were told to divert to the congested A2 to Utrecht, and then take the A12 road west as an alternative, adding 30 to 40 kilometers to the drive home.

There were no reported injuries in the fire, but the fire did damage safety systems in the tunnel.

On Tuesday the court in The Hague ordered the Naturalis museum in Leiden to "immediately" stop renovations to the building. The building's original architect Fons Verheijen filed a lawsuit saying that the renovations infringe on his copyright. The Hague court ruled that the renovations must be stopped until a court ruled on this lawsuit, NU.nl reports. 

A court ruling on Verheijen's lawsuit is expected in May.

An Amsterdam artist's sculpture for the academic hospital in Leiden has become an internet sensation in Russia. It seems that the monster statue - a gray blob with the head of a sea elephant waiting for a seat with its hands patiently folded - perfectly embodies the Russian 'waiting' culture, a leftover from the communist era during which almost all goods had to be waited for, Het Parool reports.

On Thursday night the police raided the Hells Angels clubhouse on Baljuwslaan and arrested a total of 10 people. The suspects include nine men and one woman. According to the police, the 9 men make up the entire Haarlem chapter of the outlaw motorcycle gang, ANP reports.

The men are aged between 35 and 64 years and come from Haarlem, Leiden, Gouda, Alkmaar and IJmuiden. They are all suspected of participation in a criminal organization. Some are also suspected of extortion, threats, violence and arson.

A Mosaic tiled Mexican skull in the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden - one of the museum's star pieces - is a fake, NOS reports. The skull is supposed to be hundreds of years old, but research revealed that glue was used on it that wasn't available until last century.

The museum bought the skull from Mexico in 1963 for 20 thousand dollars. The museum believed the skull came from the heyday of the Mixtec - an ancient Mexican people that decorated skulls with precious stones and put them in crypts. This was in the centuries before the arrival of Columbus.

The Sinterklaas Foundation in Leiden issued an official aplogy after a commotion erupted due their use of savage-like  "cannibal" Zwarte Piet characters in blacface makeup. Sinterklaas was accompanied by a parade of blackface Piet characters dressed in frizzy wigs with bones in and panther skins when he arrived in Leiden on Saturday, Omroep West reports.

Protest group Kick Out Zwarte Piet is plainning at least three more protests against blackface Zwarte Piet in the coming weeks, the organization announced on Thursday, ANP reports.

The group will hold "peaceful protests" at Sinterklaas' arrival in Leiden on November 19th, in Utrecht on November 26th and Rotterdam on November 207th.

Scheduled train service between Amsterdam and Schiphol airport will not take place this weekend due to maintenance work on the railroad. Travelers will instead be transported by bus to and from the airport, which should take an extra 15 to 30 minutes, the Dutch railway NS stated on its website.

The service interruption is part of a long-term plan to build additional tracks and overpasses so more trains can service the airport from the capital city, railway maintenace firm ProRail said on its website.
