Four female professors, united under Angels in Action, is calling on the University of Leiden to make more rooms for female scientists on its walls. They did so by replacing the 117 portraits of "dead white men" and one woman hanging on the Senate Chamber of the university's Academy Building with 99 portraits of female professors on Tuesday.

An international team of astronomers, including three Leiden scientists, discovered a galaxy that is 13.4 billion light years away. That means that this galaxy came into existence about 400 million years after the Big Bang, breaking the previous oldest galaxy record with 150 million years, the Leiden University announced.

Researchers from the Leiden University and Erasmus medical centers were awarded a grant to further develop their 3D-printing technique to correct gaps in the backs of fetuses afflicted with by spina bifida. Professor Dick Oepkes of the LUMC and Alex Eggink of Erasmus created propose a minimally invasive procedure during early stages of pregnancy to print a watertight seal directly upon the unborn child, closing off the spine and nerves.

A 17th century postmaster's case full of undelivered letters has been rediscovered in The Hague Museum for Communications' archive. Scientists have started examining the letters and will hopefully soon be able to shed more light on every day life in the 17th century, with all the gossip, intrigue and scandal it entails.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man early Wednesday morning for publishing a mass shooting threat against Leiden University on internet bulletin board 4Chan. The suspect, a student at the university from Valkenburg, Zuid-Holland, was apprehended at about 12:30 a.m.

Police presence has been visibly increased at Leiden University after social media bulletin-board site 4Chan received a post that threatened a shooting at the university on Tuesday morning. The message was received by police and as yet the authenticity has not been confirmed, reported ad.nl.

The University of Amsterdam has once again managed to snag the top Dutch university position in the QS World University Rankings, beating Delft University of Technology and Utrecht University. TU Delft moved up 22 places from last year's 86th position, to number 64 this year.

VVD MP Ard van der Steur will be named the next Minister of Justice and Security as early as Friday, the Telegraaf reported. He became a member of the Tweede Kamer lower house of Parliament in 2010.

A patient has brought a disciplinary case against the director of Valk, KLM and Leiden University's fear of flying institute. According to the patient, the director, who is also a psychotherapist, seriously abused his position for years. The disciplinary case will be discussed in The Hague today.

For the first time in history the 20:00 news was not broadcast last night due to a man forcing himself into the NOS studios demanding airtime. The man, who was carrying a (later identified as) fake pistol, entered the building shortly before 20:00. The police arrested him in a recording studio at about 20:10.

Leiden University has taken first place over the University of Amsterdam and Delft University as the top university in the Netherlands, breaking into the top 50 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014/15. The Rankings judge universities upon four core missions and thirteen performance indicators to compare top universities, giving Leiden high marks for research, citations and international outlook.

Netherlands universities have made tremendous improvement in the 2013/2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

In this year’s rankings, a total of 12 Dutch research institutions reached the top 200 level and eight of them have made into the top 100, compared to seven universities reached the top 100 level in the 2012 ranking, according to Times Higher Education.

Dutch universities once again rank high on one of the most important worldwide lists. After the United States and the United Kingdom, the Netherlands is the best represented country in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking. Last year, seven Dutch universities were in the top 100, this year there are eight.
