A large cannabis plantation was found during a police raid on a factory building in the Groningen town of Foxhol on Monday. The plantation contained many thousands of cannabis plants, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

The building is located on Avebeweg on WA Scholtenpark. Until 2012 it served as the head office of Avebe, after which it was sold. The police broke into the building with a chainsaw, according to the newspaper.

An ATM on Lieuwenburg in Leeuwarden was blown open around 4:30 a.m. on Friday morning. The ATM bombing caused a great deal of damage, the police said on Twitter.

The police closed down a wide area around the ATM and called in the fire brigade and the Ministry of Defense's explosive disposal team as a precaution, NU.nl reports. Several homes were evacuated. The municipality is arranging shelter for the residents.

Amsterdam has the most to offer of all municipalities in the Netherlands when it comes to culture. Maastricht and Leeuwarden are in second and third place respectively, according to the new Atlas for Municipalities presented in Leeuwarden on Wednesday afternoon, Het Parool reports.

Among the provinces, Groningen has the biggest cultural offering, followed by Zeeland and Noord-Holland. Flevoland is last on the ranking.

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a workplace accident in Leeuwarden on Thursday. The victims were working in a factory on Hidalgoweg, NU.nl reports.

The police report that the injured man was rushed to hospital by ambulance. The identity on the person who died is not yet known.

Exactly what happened is unclear. The Inspectorate for Social Affairs and Employment is investigating.

On Wednesday the police arrested a man in the city hall of Leeuwarden for threatening and attacking an employee. The municipal employee sustained injuries to his hand, NU.nl reports.

The man threatened the employee with "something that looks like a knife", a spokesperson for the police said to the newspaper. The employee was checked over by paramedics. The extent of his injuries is unclear.

The police closed down the city hall for investigation. The suspect was taken to a police station for questioning.

In 2015, when Dutch municipalities took over the responsibility of youth care, there were 349 thousand kids in youth care, last year there were 392,500, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

A man died while being arrested in his home in the Leeuwarden neighborhood of Techum late on Saturday night. The police responded to the home after receiving a report of a fight. The man resisted arrest and became unwell, the police said in a statement.

Two police officers responded to the home to investigate reports of a fight. They spoke to those present in the home, including the resident. When the officers tried to arrest the resident, he resisted. "There was a scuffle, but the man suddenly became unwell", a police spokesperson said to RTL Nieuws.

Motorists are allowed to touch their cellphone while they're driving, but only if it is in a holder. Holding a phone while driving is forbidden, the court in Leeuwarden ruled on Wednesday in a case about a traffic fine, RTL Nieuws reports.

A motorist was fined 230 euros in Sneek for using a mobile phone behind the wheel. The phone was in a hands-free holder. The subdistrict court ruled against the motorist, finding that touching the phone is the same as holding it. But now the court in Leeuwarden ruled differently.

ProRail is investigating possibilities for high speed trains between Amsterdam and Groningen or Leeuwarden. The Dutch rail manager would like to have a train run this route in an hour, instead of the current over two hours, NU.nl reports.

It will not be necessary to install a high speed line, but the speed on existing lines will need to be increased considerably, according to the newspaper. The fast train will also not stop anywhere along the way.

The police are looking for a young woman with blonde hair in connection with the disappearance of 18-year-old Remon Bruinsma in Leeuwarden early this month. Surveillance camera footage show the woman giving Remon directions shortly before his disappearance. A woman came forward on Sunday, but she turned out not to be the woman the police are looking for, Remon's mother said on Facebook.

A number of items were found in the search for missing 18-year-old Remon Bruinsma in Leeuwarden on Tuesday, including a bandana that looks like the one Remon liked to wear. Searchers also found a cellphone battery and a pair of gloves, though it is not yet clear whether these belong to the missing teenager from De Westereen in Friesland, the Telegraaf reports.

Eighteen year old Remon Bruinsma from De Westerveen in Friesland went missing in Leeuwarden during the early hours of Friday morning. Despite days of searching, there's still no sign of him. His parents are calling on local businesses and residents to check their surveillance cameras and send footage of anyone that "may be Remon" to the police, the Telegraaf reports.

Police officers ran a training drill on how to deal with school shootings in a building of a Leeuwarden college. Victims and perpetrators were all played by students following some form of security training, to make the exercise as realistic as possible for police officers, NOS reports.

According to the police, preventing a panic is the most important thing when dealing with such an incident. Follow the instructions of first responders - both police and paramedics - they know where the safe places are.

Murder suspect Admilson R. was forcibly removed from the court in Leeuwarden after he had an outburst on Monday morning. The court was handling the appeal case against Admilson R. and his brother Marcos R. for the murders of three people in Drenthe in 2012 and 2013. Admilson R. jumped up and shouted that he deserves a life sentence, AD reports.

"You determine my punishment. But I determine my time", R. shouted, jumping up. Four guards grabbed him and dragged him out of the court room. It turned out that he had a small, sharp object - believed to be a razor blade - on him.

A critically injured man was found on Jacobijnerkerkhof in Leeuwarden on Tuesday night. Emergency workers tried to help him, but the 35-year-old man died on the street. The police believe he was murdered.

The police immediately launched an investigation, including calling forensic investigators in to examine the crime scene. "On the basis of the first findings, it became clear that the 35-year-old man was killed by a crime", the police said in a statement.

Wednesday was a wet and rainy day for the Netherlands. According to Weeronline, between 40 and 45 millimeters of rain fell in the west of Zuid-Holland, the north of Noord-Holland and on the Wadden islands. That's about half of what is usual for the entire month of August.

By Wednesday night Leeuwarden had the most rain, with 52.2 millimeters measured. Places like Grouw and Stavoren also got over 50 millimeters of rain. "Locally the total rainfall can climb up to 60 mm by [Thursday] morning", the weather agency said on Wednesday night.

No trains are traveling between Leeuwarden and Zwolle on Monday morning after a person was killed in a fatal accident on the N31 near Widrum in Friesland. A car drove down the slope and ended up next to the track. According to broadcaster NOS, the car caught fire and the driver was killed.

The driver was the only person inside the car. The N31 was closed down in both directions so that emergency services could do their work.

A 22-year-old student was killed in a house fire on Emmanuel Murandstraat in Leeuwarden early on Monday morning. Firefighters rescued the victim with a crane and resuscitated him at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries, the Leeuwarder Courant reports.

The number of welfare recipients in the Netherlands increased by 4 percent last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday. At the end of December 2016 the Netherlands counted a total of 467 thousand welfare recipients, 18 thousand more than December 2015.

The growth can mainly be attributed to non-Western immigrants, particularly asylum seekers who were given refugee status in the Netherlands last year. After being given a residency permits, refugees can apply for welfare.
