Cat lovers can celebrate International Cat Day on Thursday by going to watch cat videos on the big screen in six Dutch cities. This is the first year that Dutch cinemas are participating in the international CatVideoFest. 

Cinemas in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Leeuwarden and Hilversum are taking part in this international festival celebrating the hero of the internet, Het Parool reports. Visitors will see an around 70 minutes-long compilation of funny or cute (or both) cat videos and animations.

The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, is investigating the death of a 42-year-old man from Leeuwarden who died after the police intervened in a fight in a mental health institution on Wednesday, NOS reports.

The police responded to the GGZ clinic on Borniastraat in Leeuwarden on Wednesday evening. Patients were fighting with each other and a fire had broken out. Clinic staff called the police to help with a patient who was resisting their attempts to calm him down, according to the broadcaster.

A resident of Van Harenstraat in Leeuwarden found a hand grenade in his garden on Sunday morning. The explosive was disarmed by experts from the Ministry of Defense and removed from the scene, the Friesland police said on Twitter.

The explosive was discovered at around 9:30 a.m. According to the police, investigation quickly showed that the grenade posed no danger to the environment. The Defense explosive experts were still called in as a precaution.

The police are investigating how the grenade came to be in the Van Harenstraat garden.

The police took down 10 fake online stores which were made to look like English versions of real Dutch stores on Tuesday. Two suspects, a 40-year-old man from Leeuwarden and a 21-year-old man from Groningen, were arrested.

These English-language sites looked like the websites of real Dutch stores, with web addresses that were very similar to those of recognized stores with a Chamber of Commerce registration. Visitors bought products like milk powder, energy drinks, shampoo, deodorant and alcohol. After payment, the products were never delivered.

Startling security camera footage surfaced on Wednesday showing the moment a passenger train collided with a semi-trailer truck. The crash happened in Leeuwarden, Friesland late last week, resulting in several minor injuries.

A large cloud can be seen emanating from the semi-trailer at the moment of impact. The truck was hauling milk powder near a FrieslandCampina dairy facility. The video was first broadcast by Omroep Fryslan.

Activists angered by the use of blackface around the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition are planning to protest in Dokkum on Saturday. The protestors had previously made arrangements with the municipality to lawfully demonstrate in the Friesland town at the televised Sinterklaas arrival last year, but their buses were stopped by people who created a blockade on the A7 motorway shutting down all traffic on a main road into the province.

People who went to see the giant marionettes of Royal de Luxe in Leeuwarden on Sunday, were left stranded by a train disruption. A faulty overhead line meant very limited trains between Zwolle and Meppel, which forms part of the route between Zwolle and Leeuwarden, NU.nl reports.

According to ProRail, about half a kilometer of overhead line was pulled down by a train. This brought train traffic on the route to a complete standstill for a time. From around 6:30 p.m. a limited number of trains could run on one rail on the route.

Leeuwarden, the Culture Capital of Europe this year, will host three very special guests this weekend - giant marionettes from French street theater company Royal de Luxe. They'll be in Leeuwarden on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, RTL Nieuws reports.

The star of the show is the 11 meter high Diver. The marionette weighs 3 tons and needs 40 people to move him at a speed of 2 kilometers per hour. He will be accompanied by the Giant Little Girl of 5.5 meters and the 3 meter high Xolo dog.

Thirteen year old Emily and 14-year-old Kirsten, who went missing in Leeuwarden on Friday, have been found. A police officer found the girls on a Leeuwarden street on Wednesday afternoon, the Telegraaf reports.

The two girls walked out of a care institution in Leeuwarden on Friday. Where they were in the days since then, is not clear.

The police thanked everyone who helped look for the missing girls.

Two young teenage girls from Leeuwarden have been missing since the weekend. The police and the parents of 13-year-old Emily and 14-year-old Kirsten  are very concerned.

The two girls ran away from a treatment center in Leeuwarden at 11:20 p.m. on Friday. Both left on foot and carried a bag with them.

"Unfortunately, our daughters have not yet been found, please keep an eye out for them! We are so terribly worried... Girls where are you? Call me. Big kiss, daddy", Kirsten's dad Sander Wessels wrote on Twitter.

A helicopter ambulance carrying a patient was unable to land at the Leeuwarden Medical Center on Monday night due to a drone. The helicopter had to fly away, because the situation was unsafe, the Telegraaf reports.

After a detour, the helicopter was able to land and the patient was safely transferred to the hospital. 

A helicopter ambulance fills the same function as a regular ambulance, only in the sky. Unlike a trauma helicopter, helicopter ambulances don't carry doctors with them.

A number of office buildings and homes in the vicinity of the old tax office in Leeuwarden were evacuated on Friday. A large fire started in the former tax building on Tesselschadestraat on Friday morning, and smoke is drawing over the city, RTL Nieuws reports.

An NL Alert was sent out around 9:00 a.m. warning locals to keep out of the smoke, keep doors and windows closed and to switch of their ventilation.

A large cannabis plantation was found during a police raid on a factory building in the Groningen town of Foxhol on Monday. The plantation contained many thousands of cannabis plants, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

The building is located on Avebeweg on WA Scholtenpark. Until 2012 it served as the head office of Avebe, after which it was sold. The police broke into the building with a chainsaw, according to the newspaper.

An ATM on Lieuwenburg in Leeuwarden was blown open around 4:30 a.m. on Friday morning. The ATM bombing caused a great deal of damage, the police said on Twitter.

The police closed down a wide area around the ATM and called in the fire brigade and the Ministry of Defense's explosive disposal team as a precaution, NU.nl reports. Several homes were evacuated. The municipality is arranging shelter for the residents.

Amsterdam has the most to offer of all municipalities in the Netherlands when it comes to culture. Maastricht and Leeuwarden are in second and third place respectively, according to the new Atlas for Municipalities presented in Leeuwarden on Wednesday afternoon, Het Parool reports.

Among the provinces, Groningen has the biggest cultural offering, followed by Zeeland and Noord-Holland. Flevoland is last on the ranking.

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a workplace accident in Leeuwarden on Thursday. The victims were working in a factory on Hidalgoweg, NU.nl reports.

The police report that the injured man was rushed to hospital by ambulance. The identity on the person who died is not yet known.

Exactly what happened is unclear. The Inspectorate for Social Affairs and Employment is investigating.

On Wednesday the police arrested a man in the city hall of Leeuwarden for threatening and attacking an employee. The municipal employee sustained injuries to his hand, NU.nl reports.

The man threatened the employee with "something that looks like a knife", a spokesperson for the police said to the newspaper. The employee was checked over by paramedics. The extent of his injuries is unclear.

The police closed down the city hall for investigation. The suspect was taken to a police station for questioning.

In 2015, when Dutch municipalities took over the responsibility of youth care, there were 349 thousand kids in youth care, last year there were 392,500, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

A man died while being arrested in his home in the Leeuwarden neighborhood of Techum late on Saturday night. The police responded to the home after receiving a report of a fight. The man resisted arrest and became unwell, the police said in a statement.

Two police officers responded to the home to investigate reports of a fight. They spoke to those present in the home, including the resident. When the officers tried to arrest the resident, he resisted. "There was a scuffle, but the man suddenly became unwell", a police spokesperson said to RTL Nieuws.

Motorists are allowed to touch their cellphone while they're driving, but only if it is in a holder. Holding a phone while driving is forbidden, the court in Leeuwarden ruled on Wednesday in a case about a traffic fine, RTL Nieuws reports.

A motorist was fined 230 euros in Sneek for using a mobile phone behind the wheel. The phone was in a hands-free holder. The subdistrict court ruled against the motorist, finding that touching the phone is the same as holding it. But now the court in Leeuwarden ruled differently.

ProRail is investigating possibilities for high speed trains between Amsterdam and Groningen or Leeuwarden. The Dutch rail manager would like to have a train run this route in an hour, instead of the current over two hours, NU.nl reports.

It will not be necessary to install a high speed line, but the speed on existing lines will need to be increased considerably, according to the newspaper. The fast train will also not stop anywhere along the way.
