The chance that the Vuelta a España will start in Utrecht in 2020 increased considerably on Monday. The Provincial States made a contribution of 2.1 million euros available for the organization involved in being the cycling event's starting point, NU.nl reports.
Nijmegen officials called a report from an Italian website “absurd” saying that the 2016 Giro d’Italia will kick off from the Gelderland city. The report calling it the official starting point of the 2016 Giro d’Italia cycling race comes from cycling site Tutto Bici, and is sourced to Nijmegen cycling activist Jos Sluijsmans.
After winning bids for the 2015 Tour de France and 2010 Giro d'Italia determined Utrecht as the starting place for both bicycle races, the Business Platoon Utrecht (BPU) wants to make the city the starting point for famed Spanish cycling race, La Vuelta, as well, AD reports. This would make Utrecht the only city in the world to have hosted all three major cycling races.
