Autumn weather started in the Netherlands on Friday with a storm that for strong winds from meteorological institute KNMI. By 2:40 p.m. a total of 260 flights had been canceled at Schiphol airport. Due to the wind, not all of the airport's runways can be used.

A westerly storm is forecast to hit the Netherlands on Friday. Schiphol therefore warns that flights from or to the airport may be delayed or canceled. Travelers are advised to check their current flight information before leaving for the airport.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for a large part of the Netherlands on Friday. Winds up to 85 kilometers per hour are expected. Due to the strong winds, some of Schiphol's runways can't be used. 

The airport already reports a large number of canceled departures and arrivals on its website.

Storms are heading to the southern and central parts of the Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning.

The warning is in place for Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Gelderland, Utrecht, Noord-Brabant, and Zeeland from 3:00 p.m. until the evening.

"Chance of thunderstorms with lots of rain in a short time", the KNMI warns. "Traffic and outside activities may be hindered. Avoid open water and open areas, do not shelter under trees. Follow weather reports and warnings."

After this year's hot summer, the Netherlands and the rest of the world can expect another four unusually warm years, according to a new statistical analysis of the world temperature by Sybren Drijfhout of the Dutch meteorological institute KNMI and French colleague Florian Sevellec from the University of Brest, the Volkskrant reports.

The Groningen city of Appingedam was hit by two earthquakes in two days time. The earthquakes happened on Wednesday and Thursday, and both registered 1.9 on the Richter scale, according to meteorological institute KNMI. 

Multiple people reported feeling the quakes, Dagblad van het Noorden reports. Some also reported hearing a bang with Thursday's earthquake.

A summer storm that blew across the Netherlands overnight was less severe than the weather services expected. Meteorological institute KNMI withdrew its just after 11:30 p.m., earlier than expected, RTL Nieuws reports.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange warning for very strong winds in the western parts of the country. On Thursday night and early on Friday morning gusts between 80 and 110 kilometers per hour are expected.

The code orange warning applies to Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Flevoland, Friesland and the Wadden islands. A code yellow warning applies to the rest of the country, where wind speeds are expected to reach between 75 and 90 kilometers per hour.

There is officially a nationwide water shortage in the Netherlands, but the drinking water is not in danger, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. As the drought is expected to continue in the coming weeks, more measures may be taken to distribute the available water as well as possible, NU.nl reports.

Public health institute RIVM again implemented the National Heat Plan for Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Utrecht, Overijssel and Drenthe. Temperatures in these parts of the country will climb to between 30 and 35 degrees in the coming days, and minimums will not drop much below 20 degrees, according to meteorological institute KNMI.

The RIVM warns people in these provinces to stay hydrated, wear thin clothing that provide protection against the sun, stay in the shade, regularly apply sunscreen, and limit physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day.

The Netherlands is "blind to drought" according to researcher Henny van Lanen of Wageningen University. The country needs to build up larger reserves of fresh water to prevent drinking water running out during extreme droughts, multiple experts warn, Het Parool reports.

"As a low lying country with large rivers, we are always working on preventing wetness. That explains why we are now so surprised by the drought", Van Lanen said to the newspaper. "Dutch water policy is very conservative: the rest of Europe has been arming itself against drought for much longer."

The Netherlands is officially in the midst of a national heatwave. Temperatures measured 30 degrees at De Bilt at 11:20 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of maximums above 30 degrees, making a national heatwave a fact. Heat records were broken at 15 weather stations across the country, NU.nl reports.

For a national heatwave, De Bilt must have five consecutive days with maximums of 25 degrees or higher. Three of those days must measure temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.

After weeks of drought, parts of Zuid- and Midden-Nederland were hit by a rain storm on Thursday evening. One person was killed and one injured in Rotterdam when a tree fell on their car. In Gelderland thousands of homes were without power for a few hours. And Roosendaal was hit by a whirlwind, NOS and AD report.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Gelderland and Utrecht on Thursday night. The service predicted thunderstorms, with gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour and hailstones up to 2 centimeters.

Heerlen and Landgraaf in Limburg were hit by four light earthquakes on Monday morning. The first quake had a magnitude of 2.4 and happened at a depth of 5 kilometers at Heerlen.

The subsequent quakes happened deeper and had magnitudes of 1.5, 1.9 and 1.3 on the Richter scale, according to measurements by meteorological institute KNMI, NU.nl reports.

The earthquakes were hardly felt and such earthquakes rarely cause damage to buildings.

A small earthquake, registering 2.0 on the Richter scale, hit the Drenthe village of Dalen on Tuesday morning. The quake happened at a depth of three kilometers, and was so light that many people did not even notice it, RTV Drenthe reports.

"Gas is extracted near Dalen. We also believe that the earthquake has to do with that", Laslo Evers, seismologist at meteorological institute KNMI, said to the broadcaster. There were previously gas extraction quakes near Dalen in 2000 and 2002.

The Netherlands can expect more dry weather in the coming days. Until the end of next week there will be no, or hardly any, rain, according to meteorological institute KNMI. After that there is a chance of rain, but not enough to end the drought.

The Noord-Holland village of Warder, near Edam, was shaken by an earthquake around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The quake measured 2.5 on the Richter scale and happened around 3 kilometers underground, according to meteorological institute KNMI.

The KNMI describes it as an "induced quake", which means that it was caused by gas extraction, according to RTL Nieuws.

Thunderstorms are raging across the Netherlands on Thursday. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the provinces of Noord-Holland, Flevoland and the IJsselmeergebied just after noon. A code yellow warning is in effect for the rest of the country.

The KNMI warns people in the code orange area of hail stones between 2 and 4 centimeters, wind gusts of around 75 kilometers an hour, and a lot of rain that can result in flooding. 

More heavy thunderstorms may develop in the coming hours, especially in the north of the country.

Thunderstorms that drew across the Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon and evening caused flooding in many parts of the country, especially in the Rotterdam region. The storms prompted meteorological institute KNMI to issue a code orange weather warning - dangerous weather - for the entire country except the Wadden islands.

Heavy rains caused many problems in large parts of northern Netherlands on Sunday night. On Twitter local residents complained about flooded streets and buildings, and even water streaming out of the toilet.

Drenthe saw a total of 63 millimeters of rain on Sunday evening, RTL Nieuws reports. Usually the whole Netherlands gets 61 millimeters of rain in the entire month of May.

Storms caused flooding in large parts of the Netherlands on Sunday night and during the early hours of Monday morning. The worst of the storms are currently leaving the Netherlands through the north, according to RTL Nieuws.
