The EU counter-terrorism coordinator has said that The Netherlands should be proud of its anti-terrorism activities. In an interview with Trouw, coordinator Gilles De Kerchove says that it may be early national terrorism activity such as the murders on Pim Fortuyn in 2002 and Theo van Gogh in 2004 that have afforded The Netherlands the ability to tackle the current situation as well as it does.

Netherlands intelligence service AIVD has given Turkey a list of around 100 names of potential terrorists planning to travel to Syria from The Netherlands, De Volkskrant reports. According to the paper, Turkish authorities have said that these people will be arrested and deported if found.

Two returned Syria fighters from the Netherlands are in custody after planning an attack on PVV-leader Geert Wilders. This was announced by Wilders himself on Sunday, when asked by press office ANP, in relation to the arrest of a suspect of the shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, who was also a Syria fighter.

A researcher from the University of Leiden has said that Amsterdam is failing in its handling of radicalizing youth who want to travel to Syria to take part in the war there.

“A lot has been cut back on the past couple of years; radicalizing became less of a priority. It wasn’t visible as much, existed skin deep and thus slipped off the political agenda,” professor and terrorism researcher Edwin Bakker said according to AD newspaper.
