About 300 Muslim and non-Muslim people gathered in the Al Kabir mosque in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon to show support to the Muslim community in the city. The organizers wanted to to show a counterpoint to the "hateful stories" spreading about the Islamic community, NOS reports.

"We want to show Muslims that they are not alone", Abdou Menebhi of the Collective Against Islamophobia said to NOS. "Politicians, stop saying things like 'the Netherlands is threatened by Islam'. The Netherlands is threatened by extremists from all sides."

The proportion of young Dutch between the ages of 15 and 25 years who see themselves as religious and belong to a church or religious group, decreased from 49 percent in 2010 to 41 percent in 2015, Statistics Netherlands said on Wednesday.

The decrease was the strongest among young adults, aged 18 to 25, decreasing from 48 percent in 2010 to 40 percent in 2015. But a decrease could also be seen among teenagers, aged 15 to 18 years. In this group the proportion of religious teens dropped from 51 percent to 45 percent in five years.

A meeting will be held in Amstelveen next week between city councilors and members from the Jewish- and Muslim communities in the city. The goal is to discuss the important issues for both groups in the run up to the parliamentary elections in March, Het Parool reports.

The meeting is organized by the Jewish Muslim Platform Amstelland, the Jewish-Islamic organization Mo&Moos and the Jewish Bendigamos. Amstelveen councilors of the VVD, PvdA, D66, SP, ChristenUnie, CDA and GroenLinks will attend.

Dutch mosques were targeted in dozens of incidents over the past year, a clear increase compared to previous years, Dick Schoof, the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security said on Friday. He suggests that extra preventative measures be taken at mosques and at a local level, AD reports.

Amsterdam city councilor Samira Bouchiti (VVD) heard "dozens" of accounts of kids being physically assaulted during Koran lessons while she was giving guest lectures at schools in the city. "They're about teachers who strike. Sometimes even with a stick, hits on the fingertips, slaps, ear pulling. It is structural and apparently suits the way in which lessons is given", she said, according to newspaper AD. She raised the issue with the Amsterdam city council and asked the college of mayor and aldermen to investigate.

For the first time in history there are an equal number of religious and non-religious people in the Netherlands, according to a report by Statistics Netherlands. Last year 50 percent of the 18-years and older population were atheists, and 50 percent followed some form of religion, NOS reports.

The largest group of believers are Roman Catholics, with 24 percent of the population. Protestants follow with 15 percent. Around 5 percent of the Dutch population are Muslim and 6 percent adhere to other faiths like Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism.

Dutch people think that there are far more Muslims living in the Netherlands than is actually the case, according to a study by Ipsos Mori in 40 European countries, RTL Nieuws reports. 

In the Netherlands, residents estimate that 19 percent of the current population is Muslim - nearly 1 in five people. The actual percentage is much lower - currently only 6 percent of the population have Islam as their religion. The Dutch estimate that by 2020, 26 percent of the population will be Muslim. In reality its only 7 percent.

The leader of anti-Islam group Pegida was arrested after he unfurled the flag of his group emblazoned with a swastika during a rally at Amsterdam city hall on Saturday. In getting approval for the rally, Pegida was informed by Mayor Eberhard van der Laan that displaying a swastika was prohibited, the police said after the arrest.

According to The Hague Mayor Jozias van Aartsen, banning Salafist organizations is unconstitutional and undesirable, he said in an interview with NRC on Monday. This is in response to a motion in the Tweede Kamer, lower house of Parliament, asking the government to investigate opportunities for banning these organization, which they consider a breeding ground for violent jihadism.
