The ban on free plastic bags implemented in the Netherlands in 2016, resulted in about an 80 percent reduction in plastic bags given to shoppers, according to a study by I&O Research. 94 percent of Netherlands residents said it has become a habit to take their own bag to the supermarket, NOS reports.

In 2018, an average of 35 plastic bags were sold per Netherlands resident, around 80 percent less than in 2015 before shops had to charge for their bags. The number of plastic carrier bags in litter has decreased by around 60 percent in the same period.

Students from middle-income households are worst off after the introduction of the student loan system. They often receive no grants, and their parents can't contribute much to their study costs. As a result, this group is financially worse off than students with parents from lower and higher income groups, student organization ISO concluded based on a survey by I&O Research, the Volkskrant reports.

95 percent of Netherlands residents are in favor of harsher punishments for violence against police officers and other first responders during New Year's. 78 percent agree that fireworks should be banned next year in neighborhoods where aid workers are threatened. And 72 percent agree that fireworks should be banned in municipalities where the police cannot guarantee safety, according to a study by I&O Research on behalf of Binnelands Bestuur.

The issue of whether or not Schiphol should be allowed to grow further, has the Dutch population divided. A tiny majority thinks the airport should be allowed more flight movements, while an almost as large group thinks it should stay as it is, according to a study by I&O Research on behalf of environmental organizations Milieudefensie, RTL Nieuws reports.

The researchers found that 35 percent of Dutch think Schiphol should grow. 34 percent think the airport should neither grow nor shrink, 24 percent think it should shrink, and 7 percent have no opinion on the matter.

The Rutte III government is more popular than ever, with 47 percent of Dutch saying they are satisfied with the VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie coalition, according to a poll by I&O Research. That is the highest satisfaction percentage the government had since it took office in October 2017. At the start of this year, only 33 percent of Dutch were satisfied with Rutte III, AD reports.

Almost a third of Dutch voters want to punish the Rutte III government for its policy during the Provincial States election on March 20th, according to the latest poll by research bureau I&O. A quarter of voters want to support the cabinet with his or her vote. And almost half said that they won't take into account whether or not the government coalition will get a majority in the Senate when they cast their vote, AD reports.
