International students are still interested in studying in the Netherlands, but a quarter of them doubt whether they'll actually be able to do so this coming academic year. They cite uncertainties caused by travel restrictions and limited financial opportunities as the reason, according to a survey conducted by Nuffic among 941 potential students from outside the European Union. 36 percent haven't yet make their final decision, NOS reports.

A record number of over 300 thousand bachelors and masters degree students enrolled at Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences for the 2019/2020 academic year, according to preliminary figures released by the association of Dutch universities VSNU. The association calls on the government to invest more in higher education, so that universities can keep up with the continuous growth in student numbers.

The Netherlands has seen a massive surge in the number of international higher education students, with over 80 thousand enrolled at Dutch universities and applied sciences universities during the 2016-2017 academic year. This figure is double the number of foreign students in the country just ten years ago, according to new research from international student organization Nuffic.

While the study year at all universities and colleges in the Netherlands already started, hundreds of international students are still unable to find a place to stay, according to student union LSVb. Out of necessity they're sleeping in hostels, campsites or even cars, the union said, according to ANP.

The student housing shortage in Amsterdam is getting worse and worse, and if nothing is done about it, students will start opting for universities in other Dutch cities, a group of Amsterdam universities, colleges and housing corporations said in an urgent call to the municipality. According to them, Amsterdam needs at least 2 thousand new student homes per year, Het Parool reports.

International studnets who stay and work in the Netherlands after graduating provide 1.57 billion euros per year to the Dutch economy, according to calculations by EP-Nuffic based on figures from the government. An estimated 25 percent of international graduates stay in the Netherlands for the restof their lives, ANP reports.

Almost 75 thousand international sstudents are registered for a full degree at a Dutch university of college. Tey have 161 different nationalities.
