Around a fifth of the Syrian asylum seekers who are proposed for asylum in the Netherlands through the so-called , are rejected because of extremist sympathies or because their ideals are not in line with Dutch values, Paul van Musscher, national portfolio holder for foreign affairs and migration crime at the police, said to the Volkskrant.

Last week the police arrested over 100 people in a nationwide campaign against so-called 'mobile banditry' - gangs of criminals that travel from place to place to commit crimes. The detainees include shoplifters, baby formula thieves, pickpockets, drug traffickers, identity thieves and even a fake cop, the police said in a statement on Monday night.

The nationwide action was held between Tuesday and Friday last week. Multiple people were arrested at Amsterdam Central Station for pickpocketing, or attempts thereto.

A 4-year-old girl brought to the Netherlands in 2016 will not be deported to Liberia. Her lawyer told RTL Nieuws that the young girl was approved for a residence permit.

Now living in Waddinxveen, Dekontee "Deedee" Elisha Grigsby was originally born in England. Custody was given to her great-grandmother, a Dutch national, with her mother unable to provide care. After her birth, the girl was brought to Liberia, where the family has roots.

Around 30 asylum seekers came to the Netherlands with a stolen, blank passport in 2015 and 2016, NRC reports based on figures from the Ministry of Justice and Security.

According to the security services, terrorist organizations like ISIS often give such passports to their fighters to carry out attacks abroad. The police and security service AIVD investigated each of the 30 asylum seekers who arrived in the Netherlands with a blank passport, and none of them were identified as a threat to security, according to the newspaper.

The Dutch immigration and naturalization service IND received a document from the Dutch embassy in Rwanda that may prove that a Rwandan refugee who received Dutch nationality in 2006 was involved in genocide in his home country in 1994. State Secretary Mark Harbers of Justice and Security is working on revoking the man's Dutch nationality, AD reports.

The man in question, 62-year-old Jean-Baptiste N., came to the Netherlands as an asylum seeker in 1999. He received Dutch nationality in 2006. He's been living and working in the Eindhoven region for years.

Due to an error at the immigration and naturalization service IND, between 2 thousand and 3 thousand immigrants were mistakenly exempted from taking the integration exam, State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff said in a letter to the Tweede Kamer on Thursday. Their residency permits were also upgraded from valid for a limited time, to valid for an unlimited time.

The mistake has to do with new rules that were implemented for exemption from the exam as of January 1st, 2015. The stricter rules were not applied to everyone who asked for exemption.

Last year the Dutch immigration and naturalization service IND performed 170 investigations into asylum seekers suspected of committing war crimes. In 20 cases the investigation led to the refusal of refugee status and a residency permit, according to figures the Ministry of Security and Justice sent to parliament on Thursday, AD reports.

Some cases are currently being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's International Crimes Team. These suspects may end up being prosecuted in the Netherlands.

At least 100 Turkish soldiers applied for asylum in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany since an last year, NOS and NRC reports. According to the Dutch news agencies, these are all soldiers who worked for NATO and were not in Turkey at the time of the failed military coup.

In 2016 the Netherlands received a total of 31,642 asylum applications, according to figures from the immigration and naturalization service IND. That is nearly half lower than the 58,900 applications received in 2015, NOS reports.

There was a slight increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving in the Netherlands last month compared to August, according to Statistics Netherlands. The number has been slowly increasing since April.

An increasing number of asylum seekers are leaving the Netherlands voluntarily because they are discouraged by the Dutch asylum procedure, according the International Organization for Migration, the nongovernmental organizations that helps migrants with their voluntary return. "Under the current high influx of asylum seekers, there are many who choose for voluntary return relatively soon after arrival", a spokesperson said to the Volkskrant. "They get discouraged because it takes a long time to gain asylum and to have their family come over."

Fred Vertommen, an official with the immigration and naturilzation office IND, was dispatched to investigate a possible case of racism at Jeroen Bosch hospital earlier today, where a baby with a darker skin colour was placed in a room with a nameplate reading "Zwarte Piet." Vertommen says he is deeply hurt by the occurrence he was sent to investigate, according to broadcaster Omroep Brabant.
