The D66 wants to temporarily bring migrants from African countries to work in the Netherlands. According to the coalition party, this can help fill shortages on the labor market. Jarish K., a 21-year-old man from Zwolle, was sentenced to four years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment on Tuesday for sexually exploiting at least eight minor girls on Instagram. The court considered it proven that K. convinced these girls to perform sexual acts online, De Stentor reports.

The man was convicted of human trafficking, sexual assault, threats, and possession of child pornography. His sentence is equal to what the Public Prosecutor demanded. His victims are between the ages of 12 and 14 years old and from different parts of the country.

Authorities in the Netherlands say they found a group of 19 Albanian people hidden inside a truck at the Hoek van Holland. The 17 men and two women were in a vehicle that was going to travel to England by ferry.

The 47-year-old Romanian driver of the truck, which had Romanian license plates, was taken into custody on Friday evening by the Marechaussee. The driver was being held on suspicion people smuggling.

All 19 of the people found in the truck were hidden in the truck’s trailer area. They range in age from 19 to 43.

Last year the Koninklijke Marechaussee and the Seaport police found a total of 1,480 documented migrants hiding in trucks, trailers or containers, compared to 1,371 in 2018 and 944 in 2017. The largest part of this group concerned people from Afghanistan and Albania trying to get to the United Kingdom. 

The Ministry of Justice and Security told NOS that the number of stowaways has been fluctuating for years. "The controls were tightened in 2015 when it appeared that the number was increasing. That has had effect, and that is why we will continue to pursue this effort."

The police registered a total of 21,302 trafficking related crimes in 2019, an increase of over 16 percent compared to the year before. The increase was mainly due to a spike in weapons trafficking and drug trafficking, according to an initial analysis of crime statistics released on Wednesday.

A woman from Iran drowned on the Channel between France and England and was found in Dutch waters. Her body was discovered a few dozen kilometers off the coast of IJmuiden in August, NOS reports. Two suspected human traffickers will appear in court in France on Wednesday.

As far as is known, this was the first time that the body of a drowned migrant was discovered in Dutch waters. The suspects are a Dutch-Guinean man and a man from Afghanistan. They were arrested in October and face 10 years in prison for assisting undocumented migrants and manslaughter, the broadcaster writes.

A 39-year-old truck driver from Romania was arrested after 25 stowaways were found hiding in the refrigerated container of his truck on board a ferry to England on Tuesday. He is in custody on suspicion of human trafficking while the police investigate whether he was aware of the people hiding in his truck, a police spokesperson said to NU.nl.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee intercepted a tour bus containing around 65 Moldovan people near the asylum center in Ter Apel on Monday morning. The 57-year-old bus driver and a 50-year-old co-driver were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, a spokesperson for the Marechaussee said to NU.nl.

Sixteen undocumented migrants were found hiding in the back of a truck at the port of IJmuiden on Thursday. Among them were four children, one woman and eleven men, of various nationalities, the Koninklijke Marechaussee, a military policing force tasked with border security, said on Facebook. 

An employee at the port, who asked to remain anonymous, told NH Nieuws that the children were "no older than around 8". He was there when the truck was opened. "There stood a small boy with a teddy bear in his hands", the port worker said.

Police officers found a 17-year-old girl who had been missing for several days at a hotel in Middelburg on Wednesday evening. The police fear she was being forced to work as a prostitute. Two persons were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, the police said on Thursday.

Information that the teenage girl may be working for an escort company led the police to the Middelburg hotel on Wednesday. The suspects, a 22-year-old man from Zierikzee and an 18-year-old woman from Rotterdam, were arrested when they arrived at the hotel with the girl at around 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

There is less and less insight into victims of human trafficking, with especially children who are sexually exploited falling out of sight, according to a new report by the National Rapporteur on Human Trafficking and Sexual Violence against Children. This puts the protection of victims at risk, Coordinator Herman Bolhaar said. He blames the reduction at least partly on new privacy legislation.

This money must go to the police, so that more specialized investigators can be recruited and trained, the parties' leaders said to RTL Nieuws.

At least six underage boys were forced into prostitution by two men in the Utrecht neighborhood of Overvecht  over the past years, the Public Prosecution Service confirmed to NU.nl after a report in De Telegraaf. Not all of the suspects' victims have been identified yet, and there may be hundreds of victims, the newspapers write.

Police in the Dutch province of Limburg cast a wide net to snare as many criminal suspects as possible in a major stop-and-search operation targeting drivers and vehicle passengers on Thursday. Among the 17 people arrested during the day were suspects taken into custody for human trafficking, weapons charges, and drug charges.

One person was found with over 18 thousand euros in cash, and was detained on suspicion of money laundering. “Another driver stood out for carrying a large amount of chemicals used in the preparation and production of hard drugs,” police said.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee found 18 stowaways in the back of a truck at the Europoort in the port of Rotterdam on Saturday night. Seven of the stowaways were children between the ages of 1 and 15 years, the Marechassee said on Facebook.

The Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border security, found the people hiding behind a double wall in the truck's cargo hold. According to the Marechaussee, it involves several families, believed to be from India.

A man shot and killed on Papaverweg in Amsterdam Noord on Monday night, was identified as gym owner Saban Berk. In 2014 the gym owner told Dutch media that he was often mistaken for, still at large, sex trafficker Saban B. He does not only have the same first name as the convicted human trafficker, but also a similar appearance, NU.nl reports.

The Dutch government is preparing more housing and counseling for victims of human trafficking, Minister Hugo de Jonge of Public Health, Welfare and Sports announced. A total of 36 new reception centers will be opened in five municipalities this year.

The police arrested two men in De Bilt and Zeist on Monday morning. They are suspected of human trafficking at two addresses in Utrecht. The two involved houses were placed on lockdown by the municipality last year, the police said in a statement.

According to the police, the 63-year-old man from De Bilt and 59-year-old man from Zeist rented two properties in Utrecht where the operated illegal sex establishments and facilitated prostitution. The municipality of Utrecht closed down the two properties when these suspicions were confirmed in November last year.

State Secretary Tamara van Ark of Social Affairs and Employment called on the public to report abuses in nail salons in the Netherlands. There are signals of human trafficking and exploitation in the fast growing sector. "The Inspectorate works through reports, then they can intervene. It is therefore important that we all keep our eyes open, because we can not do it alone", she said to NOS.
