Last year 90.2 percent of 2-year-olds in the Netherlands got their vaccinations, 1,720 toddlers less than in 2016. Only 45 percent of girls were vaccinated against HPV, the virus that can cause cervical cancer, RTL Nieuws and NU.nl report based on the annual figures of public heath institute RIVM.
Research done by the Dutch pharmacological vigilance center Lareb could neither prove or rule out a link between the HPV vaccine against cervical cancer and side effects suffered by girls who were vaccinated
Researchers at the VU Medical Center think that boys should also be vaccinated against the HPV virus. Currently only girls are vaccinated against this virus, which causes cervical cancer.
The Minister of Foreign Trade, Lilianne Ploumen, expressed her appreciation and support for Gavi in Berlin today, committing the Netherlands to a quarter-billion euros in support. Gavi, founded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, performs large-scale vaccination programs in developing countries worldwide.
