Snowfall resulted in icy, slippery roads in the north and east of the Netherlands on Thursday morning. The strikes are supported by the PO-Front, a joint action group consisting of trade unions, school leaders and managers.
ProRail is investigating possibilities for high speed trains between Amsterdam and Groningen or Leeuwarden. The Dutch rail manager would like to have a train run this route in an hour, instead of the current over two hours, NU.nl reports.
It will not be necessary to install a high speed line, but the speed on existing lines will need to be increased considerably, according to the newspaper. The fast train will also not stop anywhere along the way.
A 46-year-old woman was found dead in her home on Baron van Asbeckweg in Warfhuizen, Groningen on Sunday afternoon. She was killed in a crime, the police confirmed on Monday. Her 32-year-old boyfriend was arrested in the home, RTV Noord reports.
A spokesperson for the police told the broadcaster that the arrested man is known to the police, which usually means that the suspect has some kind of criminal record.
The police are doing forensic investigations in and around the home. So far nothing was revealed about how the woman died.
The province of Groningen was hit by another earthquake caused by gas extraction on Sunday afternoon. The quake had a magnitude of 2.2, according to meteorological institute KNMI. It's epicenter was in the town of Garrelsweer at a depth of 3 kilometers.
On Thursday a 2.0 magnitude earthquake could also be felt in the province. This one's epicenter was in Scharmer, near Loppersum.

The quake happened around 4:30 p.m., according to broadcaster NOS. Dozens of people from Loppersum, Zeerijp and Garrelsweer reported feeling it. The KNMI called it an 'induced' earthquake, which means that it was caused by gas extraction.
An advertisement on Dutch site Marktplaats listing an 8-year-old girl for sale for 1 euro, resulted in multiple reports to the police that a Groningen mother wants to sell her child. It turned out the girl's two older sisters, aged 11 and 12 years, put the ad up, a spokesperson for the police said to RTV Noord.
"She is very sweet, only we have too many children. Take her and give her happiness", the ad read.
Gas production in Loppersum, Groningen has been shut down with immediate effect, Dutch petroleum company NAM announced on Friday. Closing the Loppersum gas fields immediately was one of the measures the state supervisor on mines SoDM advised following an earthquake in the region last month, the strongest earthquake to hit Groningen in five years.
