The police evacuated Leeuwarden train station after a suspicious object was found in a train at the station, the Friesland police said on Twitter. The police's explosive team are at the scene to determine whether the Ministry of Defense's explosive removal department needs to be called in.

The suspicious object was found on an empty train shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. The police initially only evacuated and cordoned off two train tracks, but later decided to evacuate the entire station as a precaution.

Dense, often extremely thick fog was cutting visibility in the northern Netherlands below ten meters, prompting the country's meteorologists to issue a Code Red weather alert. The red alert, the most extreme issued by weather agency KNMI, was issued just before 11:30 p.m. for the provinces of Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland, with no predicted end to the alarm.

At least one person was killed, and 19 others were injured when dozens of cars rammed into each other on the A32 highway near Akkrum, Friesland. As dense fog reduced visibility in parts of the country to just five meters, Dutch infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat called on drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

The trouble at Akkrum started just after 6:30 p.m. at marker 57.5. Firefighters, paramedics and police were all quickly dispatched to the scene. A trauma team was sent in a helicopter about 20 minutes later to assist the first responders.

A teenaged boy stabbed in front of a Drachten cafe on December 22 died of his injuries a week later. The 16-year-old had been taken to the hospital in serious condition following the stabbing in the Friesland town. 

Soon after the violent incident, a 14-year-old boy from Drachten and a 15-year-old boy from Gorredijk were taken into custody. Police have not revealed a motive for the stabbing.

A teenaged boy was seriously wounded in a stabbing incident in Drachten, Friesland, on Sunday night. Two teens were later arrested, and separately a police officer was hurt in the ensuing aftermath in front of a local bar.

Paramedics and police were dispatched to the Zuidkade in Drachten at around 9 p.m. The young victim was in front of a bar, and was treated by paramedics before being transported in serious condition to a hospital.

Car owners in the Netherlands will pay 147 million euros more in road taxes next year than this year, according to Statistics Netherlands. The increase is partly due to the growing fleet of vehicles, higher rates, and the particulate matter tax that will be implemented. In total, the government and provinces expect to collect almost 6.1 billion euros in road tax in 2020.

The road tax, or motor vehicle tax, consists of a government part and a part collected by the provinces. The government expects to collect 131 million euros more next year, the provinces 16 million euros more.

A 32-meter high toppled over Sunday night in Jorwert, Friesland, while a weather warning for strong winds was in effect. Though it was initially reported to the fire department as a possible case of storm damage, authorities told broadcaster NOS the cause is still under investigation.

It happened at about 6:45 p.m. on Hessensereed, a quiet road in the quiet Frisian town. The windmill fell across the street, blocking traffic in both directions.

The number of cows, bulls and calves in the Netherlands decreased by 3 percent this year to 3.8 million, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday based on the provisional figures from the Agricultural Census. "That is really extremely beneficial for the nitrogen dossier",Cor Pierik, agricultural economist at Statistics Netherlands, said to RTL Nieuws.

Both men and women in the Netherlands have grown heavier and slightly taller since 1981, according to Statistics Netherlands' health survey. Between 1981 and 2018, men on average grew 3.8 centimeters taller and 9 kilograms heavier, while women grew 1.5 centimeters taller and 7 kilograms heavier.

That means that men are now an average of 2.3 kilograms heavier per centimeter of body height, and women 4.7 kilograms. According to the stats office, women became "fairly considerably" heavier in the periods 1990 to 2000 and 2010 to 2019, while their height hardly changed.

Farmers protesting in the Utrecht region who then drove their tractors on the A12 motorway rejected orders from the police to exit the A12 and park their vehicles at the Cars Jeans Stadium in Den Haag. Instead, many stormed into town, attempting to either create a disturbance in the city center, force their way near parliament, or to other gathering sites in the city.

The provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel and Drenthe followed Friesland's example and announced on Monday that they are reversing the nitrogen measures they announced last week. This happened as hundreds of farmers took their tractors to protest at eight provincial governments. "This is asking for further actions", Jan Brouwer, director of the Center for Public Order and Safety, said to NOS.

One person was killed, and separately a portion of the AFAS Stadion roof collapsed as heavy winds gripped the Netherlands on Saturday. Wind gusts in IJmuiden, at the North Sea coast, even topped 104 kilometers per hour.

A bicyclist died at about 2:30 p.m. in Linschoten, Utrecht, when the heavy winds toppled a tree, which sent it crashing down on a bike path along the Haardijk. The tree struck the victim, a 58-year-old man from Lopik, a town 15 kilometers away from the accident.

Famed Dutch actor Rutger Hauer was pronounced dead on Friday in his hometown of Beetsterzwaag, Friesland, a representative for his family said to newswire ANP. The Golden Globe-winning actor was 75 years old.

Hauer passed away after a brief illness. A small, private funeral took place earlier on Wednesday before his death was publicly revealed later in the evening.

The average national rent increase in the second quarter of 2019 was the lowest since the second quarter of 2015. Rents in the Netherlands increased an average of 3.1 percent in the second quarter of this year, according to figures from Pararius. This clearly shows that the price increases are slowing down, the housing platform said, NU.nl reports. 

Rent increases fell below 5 percent for the first time in 3.5 years in the last quarter of 2018. And that slowing down effect is continuing, according to Pararius.

Police continued their search on Thursday for a missing University of Amsterdam student who disappeared when she was pregnant. Sumanta Bansi has not been seen since February 2018, and her disappearance was not reported to authorities until November of that year.

At the start of the year, 2,189 people living in the Netherlands were over 100 years of age, of which 85 percent were women. The total number of centenarians faced a 1.6 percent decline from 2017 figures, but it was still slightly better than last year and well over 13-times more than 1970's official numbers.

If figures continue along the steady trend since 1970, the Netherlands could have 3,520 residents over a hundred years of age by 2030. Statistics Netherlands estimated that 2,811 of those were expected to be women.

One person was killed in a fire at a care complex on Sietze Hepkemalaan in the Friesland village of Sint Nicolaasga during the early hours of Thursday morning. The fire has since been extinguished, NU.nl reports.

At around 1:00 a.m. firefighters had the fire under control and were working on extinguishing it. Evacuated residents could return to their homes after the building was examined. A few residents had to spend the night elsewhere in the complex due to fire damage.

The home of Friesland PVV candidate Jeffrey Graansma was vandalized. Texts accusing the populist party of fascism were spray-painted on the wall of his home in the Friesland village of Boelenslaan, according to a photo PVV leader Geert Wilders shared on Twitter. "Disgusting and unacceptable", the PVV leader said. 

The 19-year-old Graansma is a candidate in Friesland for the provincial states elections on March 20th, according to newspaper AD.

The first peewit egg of the year was found in the Friesland village of Vegelinsoord on Thursday. This is the first time in Dutch history that the first egg of the peewit, or Northern Lapwing, of the plover family, is found so early in the year, the Bond Friese Vogelwachten said to NU.nl reports.

Finding the first peewit egg heralds spring in the Netherlands. Looking for the first egg is a deeply rooted Dutch tradition. Historically, whoever found the first egg could present it to the King or Queen.

There were multiple car accidents, including a number of pileups, in Friesland on Thursday morning, likely due to thick fog. At least two people were seriously injured. The A32 highway between Heerenveen and Widrum is currently closed to traffic, with all on-ramps being blocked, NOS reports.

Multiple cars crashed into each other near Wirdum. There were later more accidents and pileups in the traffic jam that resulted from the first pileup.

A police SWAT team raided a hotel in the Friesland village of Delfstrahuizen on Thursday night after a report about a violent incident. The police initially reported a possible hostage situation, but this later turned out not to be the case, NU.nl reports.

The police responded to the scene in large numbers and closed down the area around the hotel. They searched the hotel and found one person sleeping inside. He had nothing to do with the report.

Anti-racism activists will protest in the Friesland village of Grou on Saturday during the arrival of Sint Piter and Swarte Pyt, a local version of Zwarte Piet. The protest was arranged by action group Kick Out Swarte Pyt (KOSP), which consists of the same people as Kick Out Zwarte Piet, one of the best known groups in protests against Sinterklaas' blackface helper, according to newspaper AD.

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.

The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.

A 50-year-old man died in the Friesland village of Nieuwhorne on Thursday after he crashed into the wall of his own farmhouse while trying to flee from the police. The police responded to the farm after a report of someone trying to take their own life, NOS reports.
