A police SWAT team raided a hotel in the Friesland village of Delfstrahuizen on Thursday night after a report about a violent incident. The police initially reported a possible hostage situation, but this later turned out not to be the case, NU.nl reports.

The police responded to the scene in large numbers and closed down the area around the hotel. They searched the hotel and found one person sleeping inside. He had nothing to do with the report.

Anti-racism activists will protest in the Friesland village of Grou on Saturday during the arrival of Sint Piter and Swarte Pyt, a local version of Zwarte Piet. The protest was arranged by action group Kick Out Swarte Pyt (KOSP), which consists of the same people as , one of the best known groups in protests against Sinterklaas' blackface helper, according to newspaper AD.

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.

The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.

Startling security camera footage surfaced on Wednesday showing the moment a passenger train collided with a semi-trailer truck. The crash happened in Leeuwarden, Friesland late last week, resulting in several minor injuries.

A large cloud can be seen emanating from the semi-trailer at the moment of impact. The truck was hauling milk powder near a FrieslandCampina dairy facility. The video was first broadcast by Omroep Fryslan.

A man died while trying to flee from the police in the Friesland village of Nieuwhorne on Thursday morning. What exactly happened is not yet clear.

According to Omrop Fryslan, the police responded to an emergency call about a man needing immediately aid at around 10:00 a.m. The Telegraaf reports that the police responded to a report of a car accident.

Two people died during the Netherlands' New Year's celebrations last night. A man was killed in an explosion in Enschede. And in the Friesland town of Morra, a person was killed in a fireworks incident, according to the police.

The police responded to Gerstraat in Enschede shortly after midnight. At the scene they found a deceased man. "He likely died as a result of a fireworks explosion", the Enschede police said on Twitter. The police are investigating and call on witnesses to come forward.

Ten different wolves visited the Netherlands in 2018, Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR) concludes after genetic testing on feces and DNA samples taken from bite wounds in attacked sheep. One she-wolf has been hanging around in the Netherlands for months and may be settling here, NU.nl reports.

Up to August traces of eight wolves were found in the Netherlands. Between August and October, two new females were observed, as well as one she-wolf also spotted multiple times earlier in the year. Wolves were spotted in Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel and on the Veluwe.

The government and the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Friesland and Gelderland will sign a covenant this week that will make Nedersaksisch an official, independent and full part of the Dutch language. In the covenant the government promises to protect and promote Nedersaksisch, known as Low Saxon in English, NOS reports.

Low Saxon is spoken in Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, the northeast Veluwe, the Achterhoek and in Oost- and Weststellingwerf. The official recognition comes with money for language projects, and for schools that want to promote a dialect in Lower Saxon.

An employee of a parking manager at Schiphol was arrested with his girlfriend in Gorredijk, Friesland. They were caught using the home of people who were on vacation and had left their car with the parking manager. The residents of the home had no idea, Omrop Fryslan reports.

According to the broadcaster, an observant neighbor noticed the lights on in his neighbors' home, which he was watching while they are on vacation. There was also a strange car in the driveway. He knocked on the door and a strange man opened. The man told him that he had permission to stay there.

An increasing number of cranes are nesting and breeding in the Netherlands, according to bird protection organization Vogelbescherming. This year a record number of 32 breeding pairs were counted, 10 more than last year and four times as many as in 2014.

Most cranes were spotted in Drenthe and Friesland as in previous years. But this year cranes were also found breeding in Noord-Brabant and Limburg for the first time. Twelve of the 32 breeding pairs actually hatched chicks.

Though the recovery can mainly be seen in the Randstad area. Prices in the big cities are now far above the 2008 level. But in many places outside the Randstad, house prices are still lower than before the crisis, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.

The province of Friesland, Wetterskip Fryslân and water company Vitens are appealing to Friesland residents to take water saving measures. Due to the heat and drought, the demand for drinking water is 30 percent higher than normal, RTL Nieuws reports.

The "unprecedentedly high" demand is resulting in decreased water pressure, especially during peak times and in high buildings. 

Friesland residents are called on not to use drinking water for watering their gardens or washing windows and cars. Also keep your shower as short as possible.

The Netherlands is officially in the midst of a national heatwave. Temperatures measured 30 degrees at De Bilt at 11:20 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of maximums above 30 degrees, making a national heatwave a fact. Heat records were broken at 15 weather stations across the country, NU.nl reports.

For a national heatwave, De Bilt must have five consecutive days with maximums of 25 degrees or higher. Three of those days must measure temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.

Households in parts of Friesland, Overijssel and Flevoland may experience low water pressure in the coming days. Water consumption in these areas is currently much higher than normal due to the persistent heat, water company Vitens announced on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.

According to the water company, about 45 percent more water is currently being consumed in Friesland and Overissel than normal.

A total of four people were injured in two separate stabbings in Schiedam and in the Friesland city of Bolsward overnight. Two suspects were arrested, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Schiedam stabbing happened around midnight. Multiple people got into a fight on Stationsplein and a man was stabbed. The police arrested a man suspected of the stabbing. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In Bolsward three people sustained minor injuries in a stabbing on Bargefenne around 1:00 a.m. Exactly what happened is not yet clear. Here too the police arrested one suspect.

Piet Hein van T., a 66-year-old child psychiatrist from the Friesland village of Makkinga, was caught having sex with a 15-year-old boy in a guesthouse in Katmandu, Nepal on Thursday. He was arrested with five others in a large action against child sex tourism, AD reports.

The first team of VV Stanfries from Appelscha, Friesland, decided not to play against Aengwirden on Sunday because one of the Aengwirden players is a convicted murderer. The football club therefore ended the Sunday football season in fifth class, RTL Nieuws reports.

According to Dagblad van het Noorden, the player involved strangled then 19-year-old Tessa Klaver to death in 2008. He was sentenced on appeal to eight years in prison.

A 63-year-old police officer from the district Friesland was suspended for having chat contact with a girl that is believed to be underage, the police said in a statement.

According to the police, the chats with the girl happened while the officer was off duty and via a dating site. 

The Safety, Integrity and Complaints department of the police is investigating. While the investigation is ongoing, the officer was suspended and his access to the police buildings and -systems was revoked.

Two people were seriously injured when two boats crashed into each other on De Brekken, a lake near the Friesland town of Lemmer, the police said on Twitter.

The accident happened around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday night. The two injured people were sailing on a dinghy. They collided with another vessel.

A 20-year-old man fro Lemmer was arrested. The police did not say how he was involved in the accident. According to the Telegraaf, he was steering the other vessel.

Three police officers from the Noord-Nederland police lost their uniforms in home burglaries. One's service firearm was also stolen. The police did not make these incidents public, but they were mentioned in documents about the preparation for Sinterklaas' arrival in Dokkum that were released after an appeal to the Freedom of Information Act, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.
