Dutch cartoonist Ruben Oppenheimer has the Dutch government and journalist association NVJ in his corner. Oppenheimer is currently up against Turkey over a Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He and Twitter both received Turkish court orders to remove the cartoon from the social media platform.

The appeal in the hate speech trial against PVV leader Geert Wilders starts in the high security court at Schiphol on Tuesday. The trial revolves around statements Wilders made about wanting fewer Moroccans in The Hague while campaigning in 2014. In December last year, Wilders was found guilty of hate speech, but not given a punishment. Both Wilders and the Public Prosecutor appealed.

VVD faction leader Halbe Zijlstra is concerned about attacks on the media by right-wing populist politicians. According to him, the idea many right-wing politicians are spreading that if the media disagrees with you they're lying, is "not normal", he said in the Raido 1 program Stand.NL, ANP reports.

The Dutch hotline for internet discrimination MiND is facing heat after one of its employees suggested that hate speech against LGBT people is allowed as long as it is in the name of faith. Titus Visser, director of NL Confidential to which MiND belongs, apologized for this "error in judgement", the Volkskrant reports.

Dutch journalist Okke Ornstein is in custody in Panama, Dutch journalists' association NVJ announced on Villamedia on Sunday. He was arrested on Tuesday last week when he entered Panama because of articles on his blog Bananama Republic in which he criticized Canadian businessman Monte Friesner, who lives in Panama.

The government must not interfere in the appearance of Sinterklaas' following, and hence not that of Zwarte Piet, the Council of State said on Tuesday. The Netherlands' main advisory body therefore advises the Dutch government to reject a PVV proposal to ban municipalities from cooperating with Sinterklaas events in which the Pieten are not black.

According to The Hague Mayor Jozias van Aartsen, banning Salafist organizations is unconstitutional and undesirable, he said in an interview with NRC on Monday. This is in response to a motion in the Tweede Kamer, lower house of Parliament, asking the government to investigate opportunities for banning these organization, which they consider a breeding ground for violent jihadism.
