Doctors at the Amphia Hospital in Breda are teaming up with Noord-Brabant football clubs PSV, Willem II, RKC, and NAC to monitor if and how the coronavirus spreads in team sports. The footballers' health will be monitored in the coming months, and if they show symptoms of the coronavirus, the researchers will track down where they got the virus and whether it spread to their teammates, doctor Peter Joosten, initiator of this study, said to Omroep Brabant.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte asked consumers to show solidarity with the travel organizations and accept a voucher for a flight canceled due to the coronavirus crisis, instead of demanding a refund. Minister Hugo de Jonge of Public Health warned Dutch against going on "corona-proof" vacations being organized by travel company Corendon. And Minister Martin van Rijn for Medical Care and Sports said it may be possible for professional football to restart before September 1st.

Former Dutch goalkeeper Eddy Pieters Graafland passed away at age 86 on Tuesday, his former club Feyenoord confirmed.

The Rotterdam club said they received the news of his death with "great sadness", describing him as not only a gifted keeper, but also a great cameraman and a welcome guest in De Kuip.

Eddy Pieters Graafland made his debut in 1951, playing for Ajax at age 17. He won the league once with Ajax and three times with Feyenoord, his club until 1970. He also played 47 matches for the Dutch national team.

Football clubs SC Cambuur and De Graafschap will definitely be challenging the KNVB's decision to freeze clubs where they are in the leagues, resulting in the two clubs missing their chance to move up to the Eredivisie. Both clubs have approached a lawyer to help them in their fight.

The players of the Dutch national football team posted a video on social media expressing support for the people of the Netherlands during the coronavirus crisis. "We're all in this together," is their message.

Captain Virgil van Dijk stressed in the video that we are all on the same team. "We are proud of our country. Proud of the team. And our thoughts are with everyone struggling in these difficult times," Van Dijk said. "Keep your heads up and take care of each other."

The top football players in the Netherlands joined Dutch football association KNVB and ING to create an 11 million euro fund to help rescue the country's professional and amateur football organizations. All football play has been on hold since March 12, as the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the country.

The captains of the 18 Dutch clubs in the Eredivisie made contact to discuss the measures against the coronavirus being extended to April 28 and decided that they want the season to end with immediate effect. They consider the risk of infection to be too great. Ajax director Marc Overmars also wants the season to end, the Telegraaf reports.

Dutch professional football will attempt to complete the current season before August 3, a deadline set today by European football federation UEFA. The Dutch football association, KNVB, said that concluding the season within the timeframe will only be possible if it can restart play by about the end of June.

The European football championship, set to take place in June and July, has been delayed one full year. Three different matches in the early rounds of the Euro 2020 were to be played at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam.

European football association UEFA hosted a meeting on Tuesday to decide what to do about the upcoming tournament, as more countries ban large gatherings to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.  "This decision was taken unanimously by UEFA and the 55 affiliated unions, including the KNVB," the Dutch football association said in a statement.

The top stock market index traded in the Netherlands suffered its worst single-day loss since 1987. The AEX Index, a listing of the top 25 blue chip stocks on the Euronext Amsterdam exchange, lost 10.75 percent of its value on Thursday.

The index, which includes companies like KPN, Shell, Philips, and the country's top banks, has lost over 31 percent since hitting its all-time high on February 14 just before the coronavirus crisis hit Europe. The AEX closed on Thursday at 432.10, returning to levels last seen in October 2016.

Another 121 people in the Netherlands tested positive for the new coronavirus, bringing the total Covid-19 diagnoses in the country up to 503, public health institute RIVM said on Wednesday. A 68-year-old person became the fifth Covid-19 fatality in the Netherlands. This patient had underlying health problems, the RIVM said.

A 38-year-old man was sentenced to six weeks in jail this week for striking a 10-year-old boy outside a grocery store in Dordrecht. The boy had asked the man for his collectible football stickers being given away as a store promotion when the violent incident occurred.

The boy was waiting outside of the Albert Heijn in the Stadspolder district on February 12th, asking many of the store's customers for the packets of stickers. The offender snapped, struck the boy, and then shoved him. He was arrested after store employees identified him to police.

The first semi-final match of the KNVB Beker tournament shocked many in the football world as Ajax was knocked out of the competition by hosts FC Utrecht, 2-0. It was the third loss in the last four matches for the club from Amsterdam.

It was jubilation for the Utrecht side, who will find out their opponent in the final Thursday night when Feyenoord plays NAC Breda. A Feyenoord victory would give the Utrecht team a chance to avenge their cup final loss four years ago.

The Dutch football federation the KNVB have agreed to meet with Vitesse Arnhem after the club brought out a statement criticizing recent decisions by the video assistant referee, otherwise known as VAR, against them. Recently Vitesse said it was frustrated by inconsistent decisions against the club in its matches against PSV Eindhoven and PEC Zwolle.

AZ Alkmaar was also knocked out by Lask Linz meaning that there are no Dutch teams left in European competition.

Though the Amsterdam side beat Getafe 2-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena, it was not enough to overcome the aggregate score following a 2-0 loss in the first leg against the Spanish outfit from Madrid.

NS offered apologies after a conductor played a football song about Jews on an intercity train between Tilburg in Rotterdam on Saturday evening. "Let it be clear: we find this completely inappropriate," the rail company said on Sunday after being alerted to the situation by a traveler, NOS reports.

The song was "Waar komen Joden toch vandaan", which translates to "Where do Jews come from". The song is regularly sung in the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam by Ajax supporters who use "Jews" as a nickname.

Ron Jans is no longer the trainer of American club FC Cincinnati. He resigned over accusations of racism. According to the Dutch coach, he used the n-word while singing along to a rap song in the locker room. According to the club and American players' union MLSPA, there was more going on, NU.nl reports.

A complaint against Jans was filed with players' union MLSPA, and the soccer association in the United States MLS launched an investigation. Jans resigned awaiting the results of the investigation, the club announced on Monday.

They questioned 28 of the 38 captains in the Eredvisie and Eerste Divisie.

Dutch football association KNVB and the government are finalizing the measures they are taking to fight racism in football stadiums, and will likely present them next week, newspaper AD reports. Their measures include more cameras and a football app to report abuses, among other things.
