Months long talks between the unions and employers about new rules for flexible work and dismissal law, failed. No agreement could be reached. This means that the parties on the government formation table - the VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie - will have to come up with reforms themselves, possibly without the support of the employers and employees, which could cause delays in the government formation, AD reports.

Ambulance workers in the Netherlands are concerned about not being prepared to deal with a terrorist attack, unions FNV and CNV Ambulance Care said to BNR. According to the unions, there are still no protocols in place to ensure the safety of ambulance workers while responding to an attack.

Shell may scrap around 400 jobs in the Netherlands, mainly in the Projects & Technology division in Amsterdam and Rijswijk, the oil and gas giant confirmed on Monday. This round of layoffs will be part of measures taken in the last quarter of this year, ANP reports.

Some of the affected employees may be able to continue working in another division at Shell. The precise impact is not yet clear and it still has to be discussed with the central works council and trade unions, the company emphasized.

Last year many thousands of drug tests came back positive and the use of cannabis and cocaine is increasing alarmingly, ANP reports based on urine test results the news wire requested from the Ministry of Security and Justice.

Every year the 7 million employed people in the Netherlands work over 20 billion euros worth of unpaid overtime, according to a study TNO did on behalf of union FNV. On average Dutch employees work three hours of unpaid overtime per week, worth an average of 3,200 euros per employee per year, NU.nl reports. 

Highly educated employees are the most likely to work overtime without pay. Nearly 74 percent indicated that they do just that. Among employees with a lower education, 29 percent work unpaid overtime.

ING employees in the Netherlands will soon have the right to a month's paid paternity leave at the birth of a new child, according to the new collective bargaining agreement the bank made with unions FNV Finance, De Unie and CNV Vakmensen. This appointment also applies to non-biological mothers, NU.nl reports.

Store chain Blokker will be closing 100 branches in the coming year. Sister company Marskramer will close another 100. A total of 1,900 jobs will disappear at Blokker, Marskramer and at parent company Blokker Holding, the company announced on Tuesday. Blokker Holding will eventually cease to exist. Marskramer will continue on a franchise formula. And chains Intertoys, Maxi Toys, Big Bazar, Xenos and Leen Bakker will be sold off, ANP reports.

Make it cheaper for employers to take on permanent workers, and more expensive to hire temporary workers, new FNV chairman Han Busker said in an interview with AD. If this does not happen, there will be labor actions, he said as a message to the parties currently negotiating forming the new Dutch government together.

"I assume that the new minister of Social Affairs, whoever it may be, will listen well to FNV. And if they don't listen in The Hague, we will make our sound elsewhere. If necessary, the FNV will simply take action. With a full Museumplein if it must", Busker said.

After a weekend of long lines at security gates and passport checks, Schiphol is now also dealing with overcrowded gates, taxi lanes and runways, resulting in flights falling even further behind, Het Parool reports. Airlines Transavia and KLM and union FNV are calling on the airport to take immediate measures to improve how it handles crowds.

Union FNV Care and Welfare warns of a massive shortage in paramedics and ambulance staff in the near future. In the short term, the union is especially concerned about safety on King's Day. "Given the number of people on the move that day, it can lead to irresponsible situations", Fred Seifert of FNV said to broadcaster NOS.

The union sent a letter about the situation to Minister Edith Schippers of Public Health and the Healthcare Inspectorate, but so far got no response. Which is why FNV decided to sound the alarm in the media, Seifert said.

Dutch pilots union VNV and union FNV is calling for a European blacklist for passengers who cause serious problems on flights. According to a report by the Environment and Transport Inspectorate, the number of reports of misbehaving passengers increased by 262 to 985 in 2016, the Telegraaf reports.

Fourteen of the incidents last year had a direct impact on a flight and in three cases the plane had to change course or return. There were incidents involving drunk young people urinating in the cabin and having sex on board the plane, according to the newspaper.

Over this weekend union FNV received complaints from hundreds of employees and former employees of the 16 Primark branches in the Netherlands. The union launched an investigation into the working conditions at the clothing chain after workers in Groningen complained last week about intimidation, heavy workloads, ignored health complaints and being watched in staff areas, AD reports.

Dutch banks still generally fall seriously short when it comes to climate policy and that sets the organizations behind, according to a new report published by the Fair Bank Guide on Wednesday, ANP reports.

Only SNS, ASN and Triodos scored well on their climate policy. Aegon, ING, ABN Amro, Rabobank, Delta Lloyd and Van Lanschot all scored an insufficient. According to the researchers, most Dutch banks don't require oil companies to prevent drilling in the fragile Arctic. They also don't publish measurable CO2 reduction targets for the companies in which the invest.

Union FNV is very concerned about the large number of temporary workers at Schiphol's passenger and cargo security. The "huge carousel of temporary workers", and its accompanying high staff turnover, has consequences for the employees, but also for security at the airport, the union writes in a report published on Wednesday, the Telegraaf reports.

Labour laws were violated in the construction of the new United States embassy in Wassenaar, AD reports. Employees structurally had to work overtime and foreign workers did not have the right papers, according to the newspaper. The Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate is investigating.

People who worked on the embassy told the newspaper that they worked up to 60 hours a week, including Saturday.Workers who protested were sent away. Union FNV's safety hotline also received several complaints about safety at the site.

These strikes will result in at least 10 minutes of delay per flight. The strikes will happen before passengers are allowed on board.
