The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA halted production at seven companies in the poultry sector after they were found to use poisonous insecticide fipronil in the chicken barns. The authority also recalled eggs from four of the companies, the NVWA said on Saturday.

Bird flu was diagnosed in sick birds on a poultry farm in Zoeterwoude, Zuid-Holland. A total of 28,500 birds on the farm were culled, as well as some 30 thousand birds on a nearby farm, RTL Nieuws reports.

The two farms are located about a kilometer fro each other. Another poultry farm is about 3 kilometers from the infected farm. Its animals are being examined for bird flu.

The court in Arnhem today found an egg hatchery and three hen farms guilty of keeping more chickens than was allowed through forgery. The businesses were given a fine and the managers were sentenced to community service. The court did however rule that there was not enough evidence to prove that the businesses were selling normal eggs as free range eggs.

There will be no new measures against bird flu in Barneveld, Gelderland. No trace of avian influenza was found on any of the 17 poultry farm within a kilometer radius of the affected farm, the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced.

Approximately 30,000 hens are being culled in Barneveld, Gelderland after avian influenza was detected at a poultry farm there, the government revealed in a statement. Further analysis by Central Veterinary Institute (CVI), expected to be available on Friday, will determine the severity of the flu, but for now it is suspected to be a mild H7 variant, Secretary of Economic Affairs Sharon Dijksma writes in a letter to the Tweede Kamer.

Almost all the measures against bird flu have been lifted. Secretary of State Dijksma said in the Second Chamber that the only measure that remains in effect is that of indoor confinement. That means that the poultry must remain indoors.

In Barneveld on Saturday 8 thousand ducks were culled on a farm as a precaution, reports the Ministry of Economic Affairs. An investigation showed that the farm was visited by a truck that also visited the bird flu infected farm in Kamperveen.
