A 50-year-old former teacher at a Rotterdam school was arrested on Monday on suspicion of abusing a young girl and possessing child pornography, the Public Prosecutor announced on Friday.

Charges were pressed against the man late last month. Based on this, his home in Gouda was search. "After a short scan" child pornography was found on his data carriers, the Prosecutor said. The man taught the girl "in the past".

General education union AOb and trade union FNV Onderwijs en Onderzoek are planning a national strike in primary, secondary and higher education on March 15th. Various action groups, including PO in Actie and WO in Actie, support the strike, the Volkskrant reports.

Dutch primary schools expect a significant increase in the number of children of expats in the coming years. While companies are rapidly taking on foreign tech experts and IT professionals, schools have to prepare for pupils who speak little or no Dutch, Trouw reports.

This issue is especially prevalent at primary schools in the Amsterdam region, Eindhoven and The Hague, according to the newspaper.

The PvdA wants to ban special schools from refusing pupils. Labor leader Lodewijk Asscher submitted a legislative proposal that will anchor the freedom of education in the Constitution. The correct education level for girls in the Netherlands are more often estimated lower in their school advice than that of boys. In the 2017/2018 school year, girls were more often at a higher school level in the third class of secondary education than their school advice said. Boys less often did better than their teachers had expected, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Education will allow primary schools facing a teacher shortage to let people without a teaching qualification, but with specialist knowledge, teach certain subjects if no other solution can be found. This involves the subjects music, drama, handicraft, art, and world orientation. Subjects like language and mathematics must always have a qualified teacher. The unions are not pleased with this plan, NU.nl reports.

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, adopted a motion that will allow kids in public schools to refuse participating in religious acts during a school trip to a religious institution like a church, mosque or synagogue. Parents can apply for an exemption for their kids, the motion states, RTL Nieuws reports.

In higher education graduates get the title fo bachelor or master. GroenLinks wants vocational students to get the title Skilled, Craftsman and Expert, depending on their level of education. If the party has its way, graduated vocational students can put the letters Sk., Crf. and Exp. before their names, RTL Nieuws reports.

In the coming school year, Amsterdam will tackle the teacher shortage in primary and secondary education with a team of over 60 municipal officials, four of whom have a teaching qualification. "I know the Netherlands wanted to pledge to support to global education back in February, so I'd love if you joined me now", she wrote on Twitter.

The singer from Barabods wants the Netherlands to give 100 million dollars to the Global Partnership for Education. She is an ambassador for the organization, according to NOS. 

She ends her tweet with 'Dank je!' - Thank you in Dutch.

An administrative blunder at the Het Assink Lyceum in Haaksbergen and Eibergen resulted in the diplomas of 570 pupils being declared invalid. New students to Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences will pay only half their tuition from the next academic year. The Eerste Kamer, the Dutch Senate, approved cutting the tuition fees in half for first year students. Students starting teacher training will pay half tuition in their first two years of study, ANP reports.

Around 7,900 children in Amsterdam do not yet know who their teacher will be next year, according to BBO, an administrative group of 35 primary schools in the city. Amsterdam primary schools currently still have 315 vacancies, Het Parool reports.

The primary school teacher shortage in Amsterdam is expected to increase to 500 open vacancies by 2023, which means that 15 thousand pupils won't have a teacher.
