This will make the profession more attractive and thus help solve the teacher shortage, the Council said, RTL Nieuws reports.
Dutch schools must be legally obliged to ensure that their pupils exercise or play sports for 30 minutes twice a day, the Dutch Sports Council, the Education Council and the Council for Public Health and Society said in a report. "It is a compelling advice to the responsible ministers. We see more exercise as a national interest", Michael van Praag, chairman of the Sports Council, said to NOS. "It's not only healthy, children also learn better and cognitive skills increase when you move occasionally."
Refugee and asylum children in the Netherlands do not have the same educational opportunities as children born in the Netherlands, the Education Council wrote in advice presented to parliament on Thursday. "Children's right to education should be leading int he asylum procedure", said Henriette Maassen van den Brink, chairwoman of the council, Trouw reports.
Dutch schools still do not specialize enough, which means that not every child gets the specialist support he or she needs, the Education Council wrote in a letter to State Secretary Sander Dekker of Education, NU.nl reports.
The system for appropriate education was implemented in the Netherlands two years ago, and is still not completely up to scratch, according to the letter. The intention behind appropriate education is that more children with extra needs be able to attend a mainstream school.
Schools in The Netherlands have been left out of the decision-making process when it comes to education policy reforms according to Finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem's 2008 commission.
