A new plan approved by Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan and the city’s aldermen will try to strip the seediness from the Dutch capital’s famed prostitution business by making sex workers more like entrepreneurs, but the plan could turn the city into a brothel owner. The city is teaming up with non-profit organisation HVO-Querido to help guide some women working in the Red Light District into more career-focused people, while also making good on its pledge to reduce abuse and exploitation in the sex industry.

The Minister of Economic Affairs, Henk Kamp, will be visiting China next week, in an attempt to bring Dutch entrepreneurs and scientists more opportunities in burgeoning Chinese markets. Like Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan's similar trip to China in October 2014, the goal will also be to bring more Chinese investment and tourism to the Netherlands.

Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher will be speaking during the "Solidarity Night; Jews and Muslims Solidarity with Paris" and Mayor Eberhard van der Laan will be attending the event as well.

While visiting the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan signed a deal with telecom giant Huawei to bring them onboard the Amsterdam smart city project, a city spokesman told the NL Times. The visit also included Amsterdam ArenA chief Henk Markerink, who agreed to a five-year deal using Huawei LTE and WIFI for stadium connectivity, the company said.

Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan has announced that restaurants, bars, and cafes will be allowed to stay open for an hour later than usual to show Dutch matches in the knockout stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They will also be permitted to put up additional TVs and big screens for the tournament.
