The VVD and PvdA may have found a solution to resolving their in the budget for next year, VVD chairman Halbe Zijlstra said before entering the second round of budget talks at the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday afternoon, AD reports.

Exactly what this solution is, he did not say. "We're now going to see if it really is a solution", Zijlstra said to the newspaper.

The Council of State reprimanded the province of Overijssel for shooting large numbers of geese in various natural areas. According to the Council, the highest administrative court in the Netherlands, the provincial government did not conduct enough research into the consequences of killing these animals on such a large scale, ANP reports.

The Council ordered the province to do this research within six months.

Rotterdam can go ahead with its plans to build the tallest building in the Netherlands - a residential tower of 215 meters high - in the Zalmhaven complex, the Council of State ruled on Wednesday morning. The Council rejected objections filed by local residents, ANP reports.

Rotterdam politicians already agreed to the construction. But residents from surrounding neighborhoods turned to the Council of State because they fear the skyscraper will cause parking problems and "affect living conditions". One of their concerns was that the tower will block sunlight, for example.

A group of 15 Islamic primary schools in the Amsterdam region are calling on parents not to send their kids to a new Islamic high school set to open in the Dutch capital on September 1st. The board of the Islamic education foundation SIO "has no experience or affinity with education", the primary schools said in a joint statement, which is in the hands of NRC.

The Netherlands can close all its coal plants, but only if a national law to that effect is implemented, according to advice the Council of State sent to Economic Minister Henk Kamp on Wednesday, ANP reports.

The Tweede Kamer called on Kamp last week to by making the efficiency requirements so high that they can't be met by any coal plant. The council of state investigated whether this was possible.

Dutch oil and gas giant NAM is appealing to the Council of State against Minister Henk Kamp's decision to further reduce gas extraction in earthquake plagued Groningen. According to NAM, the Economic Affairs Minister ignored the already established safety standard for gas extraction in the province when making his decision, NU.nl reports.

Lower house of parliament president Khadija Arib refused to cooperate in the wish of two of King Willem-Alexander's influential advisors to give the King more influence in the formation of the new cabinet, the Volkskrant reports.

Up until 2012 the ruling Dutch monarch played an active role in the formation of a new cabinet. The King or Queen could, for example, assign a "scout" to examine coalition possibilities and appoint informers. After a majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, changed the rules in 2012, the Kamer itself performs these tasks.

Six years ago the municipality closed 33 of the 44 prostitution windows in the city's Red Light District. The Dutch Council of State approved expansion plans for Lelystad Airport. On Wednesday the Council ruled that the objections to the zoning plan for the airport are ungrounded, ANP reports.

The zoning plan states that the airport's runway can be extended from 1,250 meters long to 2,700 meters and from 30 meters wide to 45 meters. This makes the airport suitable for heavier aircraft types, something that is essential for the plans to have Lelystad take over some of Schiphol's traffic.
