GroenLinks wants ecstasy to be removed from criminal hands by having the government regulate the drug's production, parliamentarian Kathalijne Buitenweg said to the Volkskrant.

"The government does not have to make the pills itself, but the government must want to take control", she said to the newspaper. She recommends a permit system with controlled production, so that only pills that meet quality requirements are available. "I say it because of public health, but also because we have to do something about the frighteningly growing power of criminals."

On Sunday evening a number of buildings in various Dutch cities were colored orange to draw attention to violence against women and girls. The United Nations proclaimed November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Over the next 16 days, this campaign will get attention worldwide, NU.nl reports.

In the Netherlands, at least 32 buildings in 22 different places were illuminated in orange on Sunday. These included the Grote Kerk in Breda, The EYE film museum in Amsterdam, and the Erasmus bridge and Euromast in Rotterdam.

Two men were injured in a shooting in a home on Amerstraat in Breda on Saturday. Mayor Paul Depla ordered the home locked down on Sunday after an amount of soft drugs was also found in the home, ANP reports.

31 mayors of larger Dutch cities are calling on the Senate not to remove the appointment of mayors from the Dutch constitution, and to keep the procedure as is. Removing the appointment procedure from the constitution is the first step in enabling an elected mayor. The mayors are worried that this will result in them losing their connecting role as "father or mother for all residents, businesses and institutions", they wrote in an open letter to the Senate, the Volkskrant reports.

A 23-year-old man from Dordrecth was stabbed to death in Breda during the early hours of Sunday morning. A 36-year-old man from Breda was arrested. The police believe the victim was a completely random target, based on witness statements and camera footage of the incident, NOS reports.

The incident happened on Adriaan van Bergenstraat at around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday. Responding officers found the young man bleeding heavily on the street. He was rushed to hospital, where he died a short time later.

Former TV presenter Frank Masmeijer, suspected of trafficking cocaine through the port of Antwerp, was arrested in a hotel in Breda on Tuesday. According to Masmeijers' Dutch lawyer, Geert-Jan Knoops, Belgium recently issued an arrest warrant for his client in connection with the drug trafficking case, NU.nl reports.

The Netherlands issued its first ever gender-neutral passport. On Friday 57-year-old Leonne Zeegers from Breda, who as an intersex person does not identify as a man or a woman, received a passport with an 'X', instead of an 'M' for male or 'V' for female, NU.nl reports. 

Zeegers won the right to a gender neutral passport in a lawsuit. In May the court ruled that the fact Zeegers can not register as gender neutral is "a violation of private life, self-determination and personal autonomy".

A 22-year-old man from Oosterhout was arrested in a Breda home on Saturday after at least 27 people fell ill in a bar on Vismarktstraat during the early hours of that morning, the police said in a statement. The police believe the suspect released pepper spray or something similar in the bar.

At around 2:55 a.m. on Saturday surveillance officers keeping an eye on the nightlife received a report that an unknown substance was released in the bar on Vismakrtstraat. Many visitors experienced nausea, breathlessness and a burning sensation in their throat or airways.

No Chimney Pieten will accompany Sinterklaas during celebrations in Noord-Brabant's largest cities. Seven of the eight cities in the province decided to stick to traditional Zwarte Pieten, with the actor's faces colored by brown, dark brown or black makeup, Omroep Brabant reports.

Barbershop Allure on Kesterenlaan in Breda was targeted in a shooting during the early hours of Friday morning. Multiple bullet holes can be seen in the shop's windows. At least 10 shots were fired, a spokesperson for the police said to newspaper AD.

The police received the first reports of gunshots heard in the Breda district of Haagse Beemden between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. After that the reports kept coming in, the spokesperson said. The police are investigating at the scene.

No one was injured and so far no arrests were made. The police are looking for witnesses.

In the first six months of 2018 traffic congestion on Dutch roads increased by approximately 20 percent compared to the same period last year, the ANWB announced. In the months of March April and May there were a lot more traffic jams and rush hour records were broken time and again, RTL Nieuws reports.

The increased traffic was particularly noticeable at the biggest bottlenecks on the Dutch road network, especially on the A4 from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, the A20 from Hoek van Holland to Gouda, and the A27 from Utrecht to Breda.

The Colombian authorities arrested a 36-year-old British man who still has to serve a prison sentence of over 18 years for the murder of a 12-year-old Dutch boy at a caravan camp in Breda, NOS reports.

Danny Gubbels was sitting at the kitchen table with his mother in 2010 when gunmen opened fire on their caravan. 27 shots were fired. The boy was killed, his mother was injured.

A sport plane crashed in the vicinity of Breda airport on Thursday morning. The pilot, the only person in the plane, was killed, the police report.

The plane crashed around 11:00 a.m. in a meadow next to the A58, near the small airport in Bosschenhoofd, according to RTL Nieuws. The aircraft went up in flames after the crash.

How the accident happened is not yet clear. The police and Dutch Safety Board are investigating.

A taxi driver from Schiedam was assaulted by a passenger who refused to pay in Breda during the early hours of Monday morning. A 17-year-old boy from The Hague was arrested. He hit the taxi driver on the head with a firearm. A shot was also fired, but the bullet didn't hit anyone, Omroep Brabant reports.

A 16-year-old girl was injured in a stabbing on school grounds on Terheijdenseweg in Breda on Friday morning. The victim was taken to hospital with injuries to her neck, NU.nl reports.

The girl is conscious and in a stable condition, the police said. She is believed to be a pupil of the school - Radius College, according to Omroep Brabant.

An 18-year-old man fled from the scene. He has pale skin and blue eyes, is about 1.7 meters tall and wore a black t-shirt, black trousers, and glasses, according to a description spread on citizens notification system Burgernet.

A 42-year-old woman from Hoogvliet was stabbed to death on Klaverweide in Breda on Wednesday evening. A 42-year-old man from Breda was arrested immediately after the incident, AD reports.

The stabbing happened around 6:30 p.m. The suspect calmly stayed in the spot until the police arrived. A local resident went to see what was going on when he heard screaming. According to the resident, the man stabbed the woman around 20 times.

The police evacuated Breda Central Station due to a bomb threat on Tuesday evening. The station was evacuated around 7:00 p.m. Shortly after 9:00 p.m. the police announced that no explosives were found and the station was released.

While the police investigated, bus and train traffic around the station on Gravinnen van Nassauboulevard was halted. Passengers were seen waiting around the stations while police officers combed the area, according to newspaper AD.

A car lost its back wheels after driving over a bump in Breda on Thursday morning. This happened in the curve towards Fellenoordstraat, Omroep Brabant reports.

With great difficulty, the driver managed to park the car in a disabled parking spot, with the car's bumper on the street behind it and the axle with the back wheels beside it.

A 35-year-old man from Sint Willebrord was arrested for the second time last month for involvement in the assassination of Peter van der Linde in Breda last year. Suspect David J. was arrested in an undercover operation, sources confirmed to ANP.

While abroad, J. told undercover police officers things about the murder that resulted in his arrest, according to the news wire. What he said, is not clear. The Public Prosecutor refused to comment.

Last week J.'s pre-trail detention was extended until his first public hearing in June.

A 24-year-old woman was sexually assaulted on a train between Tilburg and Breda on Monday evening. A 21-year-old man from Roosendaal was arrested, the police said in a statement.

The woman was on the train around 6:50 p.m. on Monday. The man started talking to her, and suddenly started groping at her, she said to the police.

The victim reported wat happened to the conductor. Security guards took the man off the train at the station on Gravinnen van Nassauboulevard in Breda, where the police arrested him.

The suspect is in custody for investigation.

A man , was killed in a rip-deal, Breda mayor Paul Depla confirmed on television program NieuwLicht. The victim was identified as 26-year-ld Kaan Safranti, Omroep Brabant reports.

A rip-deal is a criminal transaction, usually a drug deal, in which one party tries to make off with both the product and the money. Depla also said that the man was shot in the head.

The body of a man was found in an apartment in Breda after a shooting incident on Sunday night. Whether the victim was killed in the shooting is not yet clear, NU.nl reports.

The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. in an apartment building on Sandenburgstraat, the police confirmed to the newspaper. Multiple cars were seen speeding away from the building almost immediately after local residents heard shots fired.
