Aruba is struggling to shelter thousands of asylum seekers from Venezuela, fleeing their country to escape. The island, which forms part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, already received more asylum applications than it can handle, ANP reports.

Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are dealing with many asylum seekers from Venezuela due to a humanitarian and political crisis in the country. The three islands, which form part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, are getting too little support from the Netherlands in sheltering these asylum seekers, Aruban Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes said to NRC.

She called the Netherlands' attitude "too indifferent and irritating". Aruba is located less than 40 kilometers fro the Venezuelan coast. Around 5 thousand Venezuelans have already fled to the island.

The trade ban also covered Aruba and Bonaire, all three of which rely heavily on the South American country's fruits and vegetables.

Dutch navy ship Zr. MS. Zeeland intercepted a drug transport of 600 kilograms of cocaine on the Caribbean ocean on Sunday evening. To stop the traffickers, the ship's helicopter had to shoot out the outside motor of the speedboat the smugglers were using, ANP reports.

Three people were arrested. They've been transferred to the authorities on Curacao.

Children and young people on the Dutch Caribbean islands have too few possibilities "to develop their talents", Children Ombudsman Margrite Kalverboer said in a new report published on Wednesday. On paper the kids on Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius have the same rights as other children in the Netherlands. "But in practice, we see that the bar for children in the Dutch Caribbean is much lower", Kalverboer said, according to the Volkskrant. "We have two standards. That can and must not be."

A Venezuelan man confessed to killing Dutch cop  after the officer caught him and others in the act of a robbery on Bonaire in August last year. The confession was made on the first day of a three-day trial against six Venezuelans and one man from Bonaire for Bakx's murder, RTL Nieuws reports.

A police officer killed in a shootout while responding to a break in on Bonaire on Wednesday, was identified as Ferry Bakx, the Telegraaf reports. He emigrated from the Netherlands in January 2013 and was living and working on the Antillean island since, according to the newspaper.

At least one police officer was killed in a shootout with robbery suspects in the Bonaire capital of Kralendijk late Wednesday night, according to local news reports. Police agents responding to an armed robbery report exchanged gunfire at the scene at about 10 p.m., website 721news.com says, citing radio station Live99FM.

Caribbean parts of the kingdom who want to break the ties with the Netherlands, may leave immediately, according to Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The Prime Minister has said this during his visit to the islands, he let reporters of De Telegraaf and NRC Handelsblad know.

The strategic position of the Dutch islands in the Caribbean can be used much better. Dutch companies want to cooperate with the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom to do business in the wider region, especially countries like Brazil, Colombia and Panama.
