Children in the Netherlands increasingly grow up without learning to ride the bicycle, instead walking or being driven to school, according to traffic safety association VVN. Parents often find it too dangerous to send their kids to school on a bicycle, but not being able to cycle could be detrimental to children's development, VVN warns, RTL Nieuws reports.

Dutch municipalities should pay more attention to the safety of cyclists, according to travelers' association ANWB. Cyclists' safety can be improved by, among other things, implementing more restrictive measures on car traffic in the big cities, ANWB director Frits van Bruggen said to newspaper AD.

A recent survey among 22 thousand ANWB members showed that 27 percent feel unsafe on the bicycle. In Amsterdam that is even 44 percent. That's very high, according to Van Bruggen.

Safe traffic association VVN would like to reduce the number of men's bicycles on Dutch roads. According to the association, the high top tube on men's bicycles is more dangerous than the lower tube on women's bikes, ANP reports.

Despite Amsterdam's reputation as the world's bicycle city, cars are still king in the Dutch capital, according to a  on behalf of environmental organization Milieudefensie. Motorists take up about 48 percent of Amsterdam's space, while cyclists make do with only 11 percent.

Several people were injured in an accident involving a tractor, a horse-drawn carriage and a bicycle in Nunspeet on Wednesday afternoon. One person was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, De Stentor reports.

The accident happened shortly after 2:00 p.m. at the crossing of Waterweg and Kolmansweg. Two ambulances are at the scene and a helicopter ambulance landed in a nearby meadow, according to the newspaper. 

The helicopter ambulance was first dispatched at 2:03 p.m. At 2:15 p.m. a call was logged related to possible injuries.

Last year bicycle sales in the Netherlands dropped to the lowest level in 30 years, according to figures from RAI, Bovag and GfK. Despite this revenues from bicycle sales reached a record high by increasing 4.2 percent, mostly thanks to the increasing popularity of expensive electric bikes, ANP reports.

Last year 928 thousand new bicycles were sold, a decrease of 5.7 percent and the lowest point since 1987. In 2007 a total of 1.4 million bikes were sold, but since then sales decreased every year.

Last year 185 cyclists were killed in accidents on Dutch roads, 115 men and 70 women, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. The number of cycling deaths in the Netherlands has been around 180 per year since 2004, though the total number of traffic fatalities halved in the last 20 years.

Amsterdam has the slowest bike paths in the Netherlands - cyclists travel at an average speed of 14.4 kilometers per hour in the Dutch captial. The three busiest bike paths in the Netheralnds are all in Utrecht, according to the results of annual cycling study Nationale Fietselweek, Het Parool reports.

A man riding a bicycle in Zandvoort was stopped by police Thursday night for trying to use tea light candles in place of proper lighting. When officers stopped the man his bike was not illuminated, and he was barely visible.

Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan and the city's aldermen want to build a large, underground bicycle parking garage for 7,000 bikes on the south side of Amsterdam Centraal Station. The storage is planned for an area between Prins Hendrikkade and the pathway to the station, just west of the entrance to Damraak, in an area called the "Open Havenfront," the city announced on Wednesday.
