The Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code orange for extreme weather in North and South Holland as well as North Brabant and Utrecht. The rain and thunderstorms in these areas can be very disruptive and even dangerous. Overnight, a lot of rain fell across the country, and more bad weather is expected for the rest of the day.

Dutch airline KLM has instructed pilots to avoid Eastern Ukrainian airspace following the crash of a plane believed to be Malaysia Airlines flight 17. Ukranine President Petro Poroshenko said the Ukranian military did not attempt to shoot down any aircraft after reports surfaced that Malaysia Airlines flight 17 crashed there on Thursday en route to Kuala Lumpur. The flight originated in Amsterdam. All 295 people onboard are believed to have been killed, with a Ukrainian government advisor saying the flight was brought down with a missile.
