The Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam is dropping its bachelor's degree in Dutch due to a lack of students. The program has been struggling with too few students for years. This year only five new students enrolled, and the degree has five staff members. Spokesperson Wessel Agterhof called it a "loss-making operation", Het Parool reports.

A body was found in the water on Mauritskade in Amsterdam on Friday. The police identified the victim as 23-year-old Jesaja Dollart. The young man from Amsterdam went missing on January 17th, Het Parool reports.

Dollart was last seen alive on Derde Oosterparkstraat in Amsterdam Oost. The police are investigating the cause of his death.

It is not yet clear how Dollart ended up in the water.

The Amsterdam venue booked for an R. Kelly concert in April now says it wants the event scrapped following the musician's arrest in Chicago on Friday. A judge in Cook County, Illinois set Kelly's bond at $1 million the next day after a prosecutor laid out details of 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse against four female victims, three of whom were between 13 and 17 years of age.

Multiple windows, doors, traffic signs, walls, tram stops and a statue in Amsterdam were covered in paint and graffiti overnight. ADO Den Haag fans seem to be claiming the action on social media, the Telegraaf reports.

The vandalism was committed in green and yellow paint - the colors of football club ADO. 'JHK' was spray painted on multiple walls and tram stops. According to the newspaper, 'JHK' is short for 'Joden Hebben Kanker', or 'Jews have cancer' in English. Ajax fans are often called 'Jews', a nickname they embraced.

The man suspected of committing a terrorist attack at Amsterdam Central Station in August intends to do worse if the Dutch government does not intervene against PVV leader Geert Wilders, he said during a proforma hearing on Friday. He also intends to deal with Wilders himself, 19-year-old Jawed S. said in court, NU.nl reports.

Rotterdam police chief Frank Paauw will succeed Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg as police chief in Amsterdam. The documents for Paauw's appointment are already at the Ministry of Justice and Security and only the final formalities are required, multiple sources at both the Rotterdam and Amsterdam police and the police's Central Works Council confirmed to Het Parool.

The expectation is that Paauw will start in Amsterdam in April, though that has not yet been confirmed.

Two Amsterdam restaurants made it into the Europe's Top 50 Burgers ranking by global travel site Big 7 Travel. Not only did Burger Bar and The Beef Chief's burgers get into the top 50, but they made it into the top 10.

Burger Bar serves the 8th best burger in Europe. The company has three locations in Amsterdam and is easily one of Amsterdam's most popular burger joints, according to the site. "Perfect after a few beers", the site says about the burgers.

GroenLinks wants to completely abolish flights between the airports of Amsterdam and Brussels. According to the green party, the train on this route is "effectively almost always faster and always better for the environment". The measure can also relieve some pressure on the already overcrowded Schiphol, AD reports.

Multiple shots were fired at a restaurant on Slotermeerlaan in Amsterdam during the early hours of Tuesday morning. No one was injured in the shooting. The police are looking for witnesses.

The police received a report of gun shots at around 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday. At the scene responding officers found three bullet holes at the back of the building, on Cornelis van Vollenhovenstraat. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored scooter drive away from the scene after the shooting.

Amsterdam is extending its ban on beer bikes in the center of the city to also include the eastern part of the city center, mayor Femke Halsema wrote in a letter to the city council. There have been many beer bike related complaints from Amsterdam Oost, which have been confirmed by enforcement officers, Het Parool reports.

A suspect wanted for shooting and killing a man in an Amsterdam restaurant in July last year, is also suspected of a murder in Budapest in September and a murder in Belgrade last month, the police said in Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday. According to the police, 38-year-old Caba D. is a contract killer with Hungarian and Serbian nationality.

An estimated 200 taxi drivers will be protesting on the Malieveld in The Hague on Tuesday afternoon against ride-hailing service Uber. Before the protest, two convoys of taxis will travel to The Hague from Amsterdam and Rotterdam at low speeds, not exceeding 60 kilometers per hour. The taxi drivers expect to start their protest in The Hague just after noon, the Telegraaf reports.

A body found in the Oudeschans in Amsterdam on Friday was identified as Connor James Murphy, the police confirmed. The 39-year-old man from Northern Ireland has been missing in Amsterdam since mid-January.

The police took the body out of the water near Keizersbrug on Friday, according to Het Parool. Murphy was last seen around Oudeschans on January 13th.

The Irish man lived in Amsterdam for three years. So far nothing is known about the cause of his death.

The 33-year-old man from Syria is suspected of participating in a terrorist organization, and involvement in attacks in Syria with many fatalities.

A 13-year-old girl from Amsterdam is facing some trouble from her parents and the police on Tuesday. After her father reported her missing on Monday evening, the police found her driving her parents' car on the A4 highway, NOS reports.

While searching for the missing child, police officers noticed an inexperienced driver swerving across the A4 highway near Hoofddorp. "Between 90 and 120 kilometers per hour", a police spokesperson said to NOS.

The lawyers of convicted criminal Dino Soerel posted the transcription of a conversation between criminal kingpin Willem Holleeder and crime journalist Peter R. de Vries online. De Vries plans to play the recording, dating from 2011, on RTL Boulevard on Tuesday evening. Soerel's lawyers, from Ficq & Partners, wanted to beat him to it, NOS reports.

On their website the lawyers write that De Vries is creating a false picture of reality and acts as a journalist in an "extremely questionable way".

Attendees of a party in the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam were surprised by an uninvited guest on Sunday. A rat snake was found on the dance floor, Amsterdam's Dierenambulance said on Facebook.

"It is a mystery how the snake ended up there", the animal rescue organization said.

One of the the guests was fortunately not afraid of the animal, and picked up the snake and kept it warm while Dierenambulance responded. 

The snake spent the night at Dierenambulance, after which is was transferred to the reptile shelter in Zwanenburg.

A large fire broke out in the canteen of the Vossius Gymnasium in Amsterdam on Monday evening. The fire caused considerable damage. The 800 pupils of the high school will therefore have the day off on Tuesday, RTL Nieuws reports.

A number of pupils were at the school for night classes when the fire started. They all managed to get out of the building unharmed.

It took firefighters all night to extinguish the fire, according to RTL Nieuws. The fire department had to demolish part of the canteen in order to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the school.

Former professional football payer Yassine Abdellaoui was the man shot in the Amsterdam neighborhood of IJburg on Wednesday night, multiple sources confirmed to the Telegraaf. The footballer was injured in the shooting, but his injuries are not life-threatening, according to the newspaper.
