A 23-year-old Uber driver was acquitted on appeal for a traffic accident in which a 22-year-old cyclist was killed in Amsterdam-Oost. The Uber driver hit the young woman with his car on 31 March 2017, after overtaking a stationary city bus, RTL Nieuws reports.

The official valuations of Dutch homes, called the WOZ value in the Netherlands, increased for the fourth consecutive year. On January 1st, the average home in the Netherlands was worth 248 thousand euros, 7.8 percent more than in 2018. That is both the highest price ever and the biggest increase in years, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday.

An investigation into a grizzly report of a dead body wrapped in plastic garbage bags determined that the alleged corpse was actually a doll. Police responded to the underground garbage containers outside a nine-story apartment building on President Kennedylaan in Amsterdam Zuid at about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday where the "mortal remains" were found.

"Extensive research was then done on site, which turned out to be a doll."

In his letter of resignation to mayor Femke Halsema, Kock said that he cannot accept responsibility for the solution that the office of mayor and aldermen decided on for the problems at waste and energy company AEB, AD reports.

An increasing number of young people in Amsterdam carry a knife with them, make threatening videos with it, and actually use it on the street, and that is very concerning, Amsterdam police chief Frank Paauw said to AT5.

"You can see it is getting out of hand", Paauw said to the Amsterdam broadcaster "Sometimes you see young people under 15 who are already walking around with a knife. The possession of weapons the carrying of knives, is becoming commonplace."

A fire at a care home in Amsterdam left one person "severely injured" on Tuesday afternoon. The resident was transported to an area hospital with burn wounds, authorities said.

Several other people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, authorities said. The blaze occurred in the Amsta facility on Van 't Hooflaan in the Watergraafsmeer neighborhood of Amsterdam Oost. The building is a specialized location for housing elderly people with dementia.

Most of the population growth will happen in the large and medium-sized cities, and the municipalities around them. The father of Insiya Hemani, a little girl kidnapped from Amsterdam in 2016, has to pay her mother a penalty of 10 thousand euros for every day he keeps their daughter with him in India, the court in The Hague ruled, Het Parool reports.

Shehzad Hemani has to start paying from the day the ruling reaches him in India, according to the newspaper. The ruling was sent to him last week Wednesday. The sum can run up to a maximum of one million euros.

Rents in the Netherlands continue to rise. In July, the average rents were 2.5 percent higher than in the same month last year. The highest increases happened in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.

The rents of social housing owned by housing corporations increased by 2 percent. Rents for social housing owned by other landlords and rents in free-sector housing both increased by 3.3 percent. In all three categories, the rents increased more than last year.

A man from Amsterdam was shot and killed in Willemstad on Curacao on Monday. Het Parool identifies the victim as Amsterdam criminal Genciel 'Genna' Feller. The 23-year-old man was in hiding on Curacao after another attempt on his life in Almere last month, according to the newspaper.

Feller was sitting in a white Hyundai parked in Willemtad when two persons opened fire on him, according to surveillance camera footage shared by local media. The shooting happened at around 10:00 a.m. local time, across the street from a supermarket and restaurant.

Prosecutors in the Netherlands called on judges in an Amsterdam courtroom to convict Jawed S. in the stabbings of two American tourists at Amsterdam Central Station. The prosecution service argued that the act was a premeditated attempt to murder, with terrorist purposes, justifying a maximum allowable prison sentence of 25 years.

Prince Harry visited Amsterdam on Tuesday morning to launch a new project focused on sustainable tourism at the A'DAM tower. 

The British Prince has been working on this project for over two years, collaborating with companies like Booking.com, SkyScanner, CTrip, TripAdvisor and Visa. The project is intended to better protect tourist destinations, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

This is the second time this year Harry visited the Netherlands. In May, he went to The Hague to launch the Invictus Games, which will take place in the city next year.

The two victims will be present at the trial. A report stating that Amsterdam is losing the fight against organized crime led to alarmed and shocked reactions from politicians in The Hague. Parliamentarians call on the government to invest more into combating this issue, the Telegraaf reports.

The report stated that the authorities have little insight into drug economy and -crime, that the police have basically given up the fight against drugs, and that the judiciary is failing to tackle real crime structures.
