An Amsterdammer would not startle when finding a cat roaming around their legs in a cafe. For many years, cats have been an integral part of the local colour, ridding premisses of pesky vermin and providing comfort to the regulars. However well known Nieuwmarkt spot Cafe ‘t Loosje has received word from the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) that their beloved cat Smokey can no longer remain on the premises. Outraged by the order, employee Marie Boudri started an online petition which is receiving considerable community support.

Amsterdam is investing in education and poverty as agreed by coalition parties D66, VVD and SP. 

This is evident from the budget for 2015 that was presented by alderman Udo Kock (D66).

€32 million extra is available for Amsterdam schools and an extra €20 million for the fight against poverty. The waste levy decreases with 15 million euro.

Inspired by the annual La Tomatina in Bunol, more than 1,000 people took to Dam Square on Sunday armed with tomatoes to protest against Russian sanctions. At 3 p.m a shipping container was emptied into the square and participants pelted each other with the 120,000 pieces of the overripe fruit bought from growers left in the cold by Russia’s boycott of Dutch fruit and vegetables.
