The municipality of Amsterdam will place a memorial stone at the Wittenburg community center to commemorate . The 17-year-old boy was gunned down at the community center, where he worked as an intern, in January last year, AT5 reports.

Mayor Femke Halsema invited a group of Amsterdam retailers to the city hall on Friday to discuss how they can reduce cash transactions. The Public Prosecutor and the Tax Authority will also take part in the meeting, the Telegraaf reports.

In her invitation, sent on Monday, Halsema points to the criminal use of cash. "Because cash leaves no traces, it is misused by non-honest consumers to launder illegally obtained funds", she wrote. She believes that fewer cash transactions could lead to a safer city.

The city of Amsterdam closed Surinamese eatery P&G on Bijlmerplein indefinitely after a sleft at the business on Thursday morning. Clothing store Organza further up the square was also closed because gunshots were fired at the building that same morning, Het Parool reports.

Amsterdam coalition parties GroenLinks, D66 and SP want to move prostitution out of the Red Light District by issuing new prostitution permits for areas outside the city center. They hope that this will relieve some pressure on the busy city center, and make sex workers' lives easier and safer. But not all sex workers are pleased with his idea.

The famous I Amsterdam letters on the Museumplein have to go, according to a motion filed by the GroenLinks faction in Amsterdam. The slogan has become a symbol for mass tourism, the party finds. The motion seems to have support from the D66, PvdA and SP - a majority in the city council, Het Parool reports.

With the motion, GroenLinks asked the office of mayor and aldermen to remove the I Amsterdam letters from the whole city and to stop all city marketing activities under the slogan of I Amsterdam.

Amsterdam finds the national experiment with regulated cannabis cultivation unfeasible and "risky to public order". The police cleared protesting students out of the University of Amsterdam's P.C. Hoofdhuis building on Friday evening. A total of 30 students were arrested for trespassing - they were not allowed inside the building. All of them were released from custody again on Saturday evening, NU.nl reports.

The council called on Mayor Femke Halsema to ask State Secretary Mark Harbers of Justice and Security to implement a so-called children's pardon, Het Parool report.

Spy shop Spy City Amsterdam on Moezelhavenweg was closed indefinitely by order of the municipality following an attempt to assassinate the shop's manager on Tuesday. According to Mayor Femke Halsema, the attempted murder "seriously disrupted" the "residential- and living climate" of the street and area, Het Parool reports.

The police found a scooter which they believe was used as a getaway vehicle in an explosion at a restaurant on  Johan Huizingalaan in Amsterdam during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The scooter was stolen in April and stolen license plates were put on it, the Telegraaf reports.

Amsterdam is implementing cleaning breaks in the Red Light District during busy nights. Parts of the street will be temporarily be closed to the public, so that the mess left by visitors can be cleaned up. This is one of the measures new mayor Femke Halsema is taking to quickly solve problems in the overcrowded Amsterdam city center, following damning reports by the city's ombudsman, Het Parool reports.

Brand new Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema will be on the municipality's boat in the Canal Parade in the city on Saturday. Officials from the municipality will accompany her, Het Parool reports.

The municipality boat will be the second boat in the parade.

This is not the first time Halsema is participating in the Canal Pride Parade. Nine years ago she was on the GroeLinks boat as the then party leader.

At night the Amsterdam city center devolves into "lawlessness" to such an extent that the police can no longer handle it, Amsterdam Ombudsman Arre Zuurmond said to Trouw. The police confirmed his findings to the newspaper.

After multiple complaints from local residents, especially residents around the Red Light District and Leidseplein, Zuurmond decided to rent a home in the Red Light District to experience the situation for himself.

Mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam is making an "ultimate attempt" to convince the lower house of Dutch parliament to hire more police officers. She is discussing this matter with Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security, the Telegraaf reports.

Halsema toured Amsterdam's Red Light District during the early hours of Saturday morning, according to the newspaper. She denies that there is complete "lawlessness", as Amsterdam's ombudsman Arre Zuurmond said in previous reports. "But it is true that there are far too few enforcers and officers."

At least two perpetrators were involved in an attempted assassination at a coffee shop in the popular Amsterdam-Zuid district of De Pijp last week, a police spokesperson said to AT5.

The at coffee shop Today on Dusartstraat. Three people were injured, one seriously. The seriously hurt victim was still in critical condition in hospital on Saturday.
