The Dutch royal family planned to celebrate Queen Máxima’s 49th birthday at home on Sunday. She was joined by King Willem-Alexander and their three daughters at the Huis ten Bosch, where they were sticking to the government advised social distancing rules, with no celebrations planned.

In the afternoon, the Queen shared her mother's recipe for her favorite cookies, Alfajores, which she baked for her family.

City council members in Rotterdam voted on Thursday to approve a plan to organize the Eurovision Song Contest in the city next year. The proposal included 6.7 million euros to help cover the cost to rent out the Ahoy conference center, additional security, and signage around the city.

Some 18 more people who tested positive for coronavirus in the Netherlands died since Wednesday, public health agency RIVM said. In total, 76 people who were infected have died ranging in age from 63 to 95 years old.

Another 409 people were also diagnosed as being infected with the virus, which raises the Netherlands total number of positive test cases to 2,460. To date, 489 people have required hospitalization, including at least 177 who were being treated in intensive care on Wednesday.

The 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled to take place in Rotterdam, was cancelled, the broadcasters involved announced on Wednesday. The decision was made by the European Broadcasting Union, which manages the popular annual event.

"It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam," the organization said in a statement. The remarks continued to say the team was "heartbroken" that the event could not be held in May as planned.

The Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled to happen in Rotterdam in May, will not be canceled as yet, according to Rotterdam tourism alderman Said Kasmi (D66). "I think there should be an examination in mid-April about how things stand then. So we still have plenty of time," Kasmi said to newspaper AD. The Rotterdam Marathon will also happen as planned.

The spread of coronavirus Covid-19 in the Netherlands is starting to mess with the preparations for the Eurovision Song Contest, set to be held in Rotterdam in May. At least three more people in the Netherlands tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Reports on social media indicate that at least three of the 900 Vindicat students currently skiing in northern Italy have been infected with the virus, but according to the Groningen student association, this is "fake news".

Nikkie de Jager, known worldwide by her YouTube name NikkieTutorials, will be the fourth presenter of the Eurovision Song Contest, in addition to the already announced Chantal Janzen, Edsilia Rombley and Jan Smit. The 25-year-old YouTube star will be the "online host" - she will report about the event online, record a YouTube series with the artists, and will be on television at the semi-finals and final in Rotterdam in May, NOS repots.

Utrecht teen Stefania Liberakakis will be representing Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam later this year. Greek broadcaster ERT announced that the 17-year-old Dutch-Greek girl will be in the second semifinal with the song Supergirl.

"I am completely flabbergasted," Stefania said to NOS. "I have received so many sweet messages. I didn't sleep until 4:00 o'clock last night because I was shaking."

It took less than an hour for the first tranche of Eurovision 2020 tickets to sell out on Thursday, the song competition said in a statement. Ticket sales for the semi-finals and the Grand Final in Rotterdam opened up at noon, with some customers complaining that access to the website was buggy and limited.

The tickets for the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam will range between 18.50 euros for a place with limited visibility during a rehearsal to and 248.50 euros for a standing place in Ahoy at the final.  The song festival will be presented by Chantal Janzen, Edsilia Rombley, and Jan Smit. The organizers are also taking various measures to limit ticket resale as much as possible, RTL Nieuws reports.

Minister Arie Slob plans to use better-than-expected advertising revenue from Ster to cover the government's contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Rotterdam next year, sources told De Telegraaf. Ster is the foundation that provides advertising to the Dutch public broadcasting system.

The slogan for the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam next year is 'Open Up', the organizers announced. "We looked for a theme and slogan that reflect what the Netherlands stands for and which the Dutch can identify with; a country with an open mind to the world, where we speak our mind, with respect for each other", said Sietse Bakker, executive producer of next year's event.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will be held in Rotterdam, the song festival announced on Friday. The semi finals will be held on Tuesday May 12th and Thursday May 14th, with grand final scheduled for Saturday May 16th. Rotterdam Ahoy will be the venue, NOS reports.

When selecting the location, the organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest looked at the technical suitability of the location, surrounding facilities, availability and financial contribution from the municipality. Rotterdam emerged as the favorite.
