People in the Netherlands spent a total of 70 million euros on fireworks this New Year's, 2 million euros more than the previous two years, according to the Dutch Association of Pyrotechnics, ANP reports.

The most money was spent on so-called compound fireworks - linked ornamental fireworks that needs to be lit only once to give a small fireworks show. Firecrackers were the most popular firework this year.

The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam treated eight people with fireworks injuries over New Year's. About half of the injuries caused permanent damage, the hospital announced, NU.nl reports.

The number of victims is about the same as last New Year's, though the injuries are somewhat more serious than in previous years, doctor Tjeerd de Faber said to the newspaper. The youngest victim is 15 years old.

"The most injuries were caused by legal fireworks. Half of the victims were bystanders and were hit by flying fireworks", Faber said.

The new year is starting out cloudy with a chance of rain for the Netherlands. In the course of the afternoon the clouds will clear up somewhat, and especially the north of the country will have some sunshine, according to Weerplaza.

Afternoon temperatures will climb to a mild 9 degrees, though northwesterly wind means that it will feel colder. 

The milder weather is ideal for those taking the New Year's plunge this year. The sea water is also warmer than is usual for this time of year.

Two police officers were seriously injured in an accident on the A2 highway between Waardenburg and Zaltbommel on Monday night. The accident happened while the police were helping a motorist with car troubles, De Gelderlander reports.

The police responded to a report of people pushing a car on the highway around 10:00 p.m. Two lanes were closed and the police parked their car across the lanes to block them. The broken car was loaded onto a tow truck and taken away.

Schiphol's departure hall 3 was evacuated for a short time on Monday evening after a bomb threat. The Koninklijke Marechaussee arrested a 51-year-old man from Canada, the military branch reported.

The evacuation happened shortly after 7:00 p.m. According to the Marechaussee, the evacuation was a precautionary measure after the Canadian man said that there was a bomb in the departure hall. The hall was searched, but no explosives were found.

The man was arrested and is currently in custody, according to the newspaper.

Multiple fires started in buildings and the dunes in Scheveningen after the wind blew sparks from the New Year's bonfires over the town. The fire department has the fires under control, NU.nl reports.

Photos and videos on social media show whirlwinds with sparks in them. As the wind was blowing from the beach towards Scheveningen, this caused a dangerous situation.

Two people died during the Netherlands' New Year's celebrations last night. A man was killed in an explosion in Enschede. And in the Friesland town of Morra, a person was killed in a fireworks incident, according to the police.

The police responded to Gerstraat in Enschede shortly after midnight. At the scene they found a deceased man. "He likely died as a result of a fireworks explosion", the Enschede police said on Twitter. The police are investigating and call on witnesses to come forward.

Another Rotterdam man was arrested on suspicion of involvement in terrorist-related crimes, the Public Prosecutor's office said on Monday. The arrest is not connected to the arrest of four men in Rotterdam over the weekend, suspected of plotting a terrorist act.

Monday's announcement concerns a 24-year-old man who will be interrogated in the coming days. Little was revealed about the suspected plan.

No weapons or explosives were found. In searching his home, several data collection devices were seized.

Police officers and firefighters were attacked in Groningen and Utrecht over the weekend where young people on the street wreaked havoc with fireworks, authorities said. Fifteen people were arrest in connection with multiple incidents in the Paddepoel district of the city, AD reported.

It started when the fire department arrived in the district to put out a blaze, and had to respond again just an hour later when fire ignited again. On the second visit, heavy fireworks were lobbed at the firefighters causing police to respond.

With New Year's Eve right around the corner, authorities decided to quickly move forward with allegedly preparing a terrorist attack, according to broadcaster NOS. Normally, an investigation into similar suspects could take months, but in this case police were tipped off just days ago, NOS reported.

Four people were arrested in Rotterdam on Saturday morning under suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack. Evidence collection was underway at the locations where the suspects were caught, authorities said.

Police did not immediately reveal what the planned attack entailed.

Specialist arrest teams were joined by Rotterdam police in the initial capture. The Public Prosecutor's office is now running the ensuing investigation.
