The police noticed a striking increase in young offenders over the past year, according to annual figures released on Wednesday. More and more young people are turning to online fraud to make some quick cash, or walking around with weapons on the street - a worrying development, according to National Police Chief Erik Akerboom.
Amazon is looking to expand the range of products it sells in the Netherlands on Amazon.nl. Companies who want to sell their products through the platform can register with the American web giant from Wednesday, NU.nl reports.
Currently, Amazon.nl sells only books. But the company intends to expand its offer to "millions of products" through the course of the year, thereby explicitly competing with the Dutch Bol.com.
For the first time ever, more Netherlands residents traveled to their vacation destination abroad by plane than by car. The number of plane trips increased by 3 percent to 10.1 million last year, while the number of car trips decreased by 3 percent to 10 million, according to figures from the Dutch Tourism Board, NOS reports.

Aviation in the Netherlands can only be allowed to grow if the sector decreases its nitrogen emissions, a committee on nitrogen emissions led by Johan Remkes said in advice to the government about air travel. Remkes thinks it only fair that aviation, like other sectors, makes a balanced contribution to reducing emissions. If that doesn't happen, Schiphol can't grow any further and Lelystad Airport can't open for holiday flights, the committee said, NOS reports.
In total, over 800 thousand crimes were reported to the police in the Netherlands last year, an increase of 4 percent compared to 2018, according to annual figures the police released. This is the first time in nearly a decade that crime figures showed an increase. In 2010 over a million crimes were reported. That slowly decreased to 770 thousand in 2018. But the downward trend came to an end in the second half of 2018.
Last year people in the Netherlands lost 1,056,805 euros to scams committed through WhatsApp, quadruple the 262,879 euros in damages sustained in 2018, NU.nl reports based on figures from the Fraud Help Desk.
In 2019, the Fraud Help Desk received 2,663 reports of WhatsApp fraud and 353 people actually fell victim to these scams, compared to 655 report and 124 victims in 2018. In the first two weeks of 2020, the hotline received 112 reports of scams and nine people reported falling victim to the scammers, losing over 38 thousand euros.
On Tuesday a group of patients on the organ donor waiting list called on Netherlands residents to tell their loved ones whether or not they want their organs donated after death. "It is a decision with which you do not want to unwittingly saddle your loved ones at a difficult moment," said 48-year-old Peter, who is waiting for a heart, on the Nierstichting website.
AZ plans to have a new roof on the AFAS stadium in Alkmaar by the start of the coming football season, CEO Robert Eenhoorn said at the club's New Year's reception. For the rest of this season, the Alkmaar team will play without a roof on their stadium.

Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards won a billion-euro contract from the German navy, the German Ministry of Defense announced. Damen will build four frigates for the German navy, with the option to build two more. An amount of 5.27 billion euros is involved in the order, NOS reports.
The frigates involved are MKS 180's. They are about 155 meters long and can be used in crisis situations, anti-piracy missions, and the detection of submarines, among other things. About 110 people can stay on board each frigate.
A possible explosive was found at a cafe on Voorstraat in Zwolle on Tuesday morning. The area around the cafe was cordoned off while explosive removal experts from the Ministry of Defense investigated and removed the device, the Gelderland police said on Twitter.
According to newspaper De Stentor, the explosive involved was a hand grenade and it was found tied to the door of cafe Bruut. Emergency services responded to the scene at around 8:20 a.m.
Government party D66 no longer wants airlines to decide for themselves whether to fly over conflict areas. Instead, the European aviation authority EASA should be in charge of that decision, according to D66 parliamentarians Jan Paternotte and Sjoerd Sjoerdsma. They will submit a motion to this effect during a debate on aviation and conflict zones on January 29th.
