Last year, more people have visited the city of Rotterdam than the year before. The number of hotel guests increased, in 2012, with 78,000 to 740,000. Also the number of overnight stays increased in 2012 with 2%.

This is shown by preliminary figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), reported Rotterdam Marketing on Tuesday.

“It is good that these figures show a rise again, however, the room rates are still under pressure. This results in a 20 percent lower income, compared to the top year 2008,” says Jan Rutgers, chairman of the Rotterdam Hotel Combination.

On the first day of the final exams for the high schools, National Action Committee Students (LAKS) has received more than 21,000 complaints. This was published on their site for complaints. The VWO Dutch exam received most complaints, a staggering 15,000.

“The subject Dutch seems to be again the problematic one. The students thought it was unclear and difficult. The same happened last year,” a spokesman of LAKS said.

Unknown criminals have attempted to blast an ATM on Tuesday morning 4.00 am at the Bautscherweg in Heerlen (Limburg). The police reported that the robbery was not successful and that the ATM was still intact.

After the unsuccessful blast robbery, the robbers hurried away without any money. There is nothing known about the identity of the robbers.

During the attempted blast a gas escaped, but this led not to any damage and also nobody got hurt.

State Secretary Frans Weekers of Finance didn’t send important information to the House, although the House had unanimously asked for that, reports RTL Nieuws. CDA MP Pieter Omzigt says that it is a ‘crucial document’.

Weekers didn’t want to tell anything about it to the house because the investigations are still going on, reports RTL Nieuws. In the 1.5-year-old document, the term ‘structural problem’ is already used. In the document is working method of the offenders described, where they originate and what sentences the judge ruled.

Visitors of KunstRAI, in Amsterdam, can have a dinner with a piece of art. On a covered table they will consume a dish which is inspired by a certain piece of art. 

The KunstRAI will open its doors on Wednesday evening in the RAI building in Amsterdam. This 29th edition will be held until Monday, May 20. About 75 well-known and emerging galleries will show their art and design products. The cheaper articles will be the price range of 2000 till 5000 euro but there will be also plenty of choice of art in the price range of 10,000 euro.

After years of deliberation and three and a half years of construction, the second Coentunnel and the new West Ring (Westrandweg), will finally be opened for traffic on Monday morning. Starting 5.00 am, motorists can drive through the brand new tunnel. On Thursday, Minister Melanie Schulz (Infrastructure and Traffic) will open the second Coentunnel and the West Ring.

The exhibition on royal inaugurations, which shows in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, has attracted about 3700 visitors in its first opening weekend . This was reported by a spokeswoman of the exhibition. Last Saturday the exhibition opened its doors.

‘A beautiful weekend. We are very satisfied,’  said the spokeswoman.

The exhibition is about the inaugurations of seven generations of the Orange family and will last for exactly 100 days.

For students who are in the last year of high school, final exams begin on Monday. Besides the tightened examination requirements of last year, there have been some changes for this year’s exams too, especially for HAVO and VWO students. They may only have one insufficient result for the subjects Dutch, English or Mathematics.

A total of 207,204 students do their final exam in May. This are 334 more than last year. 109,488 Students are from the VMBO, 57,600 students from the HAVO and 40,116 from the VWO.

A new search in Geulle (Limburg) by the police, for the missing brothers Ruben (9) and Julian (7), didn’t deliver any results on Sunday. “The brothers have not been found,” the police reported on Sunday evening. Monday the search will continue.

The police started the search because of ‘new information’. Which exact information that was, the police couldn’t say at this time.

Mayor Eberhard van der Laan of Amsterdam said on Thursday in the Nieuwe Kerk, that the arrest of two activists on Dam Square during the abdication and inauguration is 'a serious matter'.

An unidentified man was burned to death due to a short circuit inside an abandoned building on the Mierloseweg in Helmond on Friday. This was according to the police, who suspected that the man had tried to steal copper.

Together with a large trade delegation, Minister Lilianne Ploumen of Foreign Affairs will begin her official visit to China on Sunday. She will go to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu.

The delegation is composed of representatives of 50 Dutch companies. These are mainly companies from the waste, renewable energy, agri-food, aviation and services sectors.
