The number of reports of sexual abuse and discrimination at Dutch schools increased last year. The Education Inspectorate received 134 reports of sexual abuse in the school year 2017/2018, the highest number in 15 years, NU.nl reports.

In nearly half of the reports about pupils being sexually abused, the accused perpetrator is someone who works at the school, such as a teacher or a member of the non-teaching staff, according to the Inspectorate. The number of reports about sexual harassment decreased, the Inspectorate said.

The Asian state of Brunei implemented new strict Islamic laws on Wednesday, which allows the death penalty for homosexual intercourse and for women who had an abortion to be publicly flogged. The Netherlands is "deeply concerned" by these "inhumane penalties", Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Aairs said on Twitter.

"A serious breach of international human rights", the Dutch Foreign Minister said. "The Netherlands joins [UN Human Rights Chief] Michelle Bachelet in urging the government of Brunei to halt implementation of the revised Penal Code."

The police found dozens of dead animals while checking a barn in the Gelderland town of Leuvenheim on Monday. The carcasses included four ponies, four goats, one calf, and dozens of birds, the police said in a statement.

A number of neglected, but alive, animals were also found in the barn on Spankerenseweg. According to the police, these animals are "in desperate need of the proper care and accommodation". The police launched an investigation and filed an official report against the owner of the barn.

The police arrested two men in De Bilt and Zeist on Monday morning. They are suspected of human trafficking at two addresses in Utrecht. The two involved houses were placed on lockdown by the municipality last year, the police said in a statement.

According to the police, the 63-year-old man from De Bilt and 59-year-old man from Zeist rented two properties in Utrecht where the operated illegal sex establishments and facilitated prostitution. The municipality of Utrecht closed down the two properties when these suspicions were confirmed in November last year.

A woman died in a shooting incident in a home on Landsherenstraat in Mijdrecht on Tuesday night. The police are looking for one suspect, the Utrecht police said on Twitter. A helicopter was deployed to aid in the search.

The police responded to the home at around 11:00 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting, according to newspaper AD. Responding officers found the critically injured woman inside. Paramedics tried to resuscitate her, but it was to no avail. She died at the scene.

The motive for the shooting is not yet clear. The police are investigating.
