The Netherlands is sending two naval ships to provide emergency relief in the Bahamas. The island group was hit by Hurricane Dorian this week. Dozens of people died and at least 70 thousand residents are in need of immediate help, according the United Nations

Zr.Ms. Johan de Witt and Zr.Ms. Snellius are currently preparing to offer emergency relief to the island group, RTL Nieuws reports. The Dutch Navy ships are already in the Caribbean because of a large Caribbean Coast emergency relief exercise, the Ministry of Defense said.

National Police chief Erik Akerboom is calling on the government to equip police officers with tasers. An incident in Rotterdam last week, in which a cop was knocked out by a member of a wedding procession, is not an isolated incident, according to the police chief. "As the police, we must increasingly enforce authority. People do not want to be corrected", he said to the Telegraaf.

Foundation Join Us launched a hotline for young people struggling with loneliness. It is estimated that tens of thousands of young people between the ages of 12 and 30 are lonely in the Netherlands. "The hotline should make the urgency of the problem clear, also to politicians", Jolanda van Gerwe, initiator of Join Us and co-founder of the hotline, said to RTL Nieuws.

Rents in the Netherlands continue to rise. In July, the average rents were 2.5 percent higher than in the same month last year. The highest increases happened in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.

The rents of social housing owned by housing corporations increased by 2 percent. Rents for social housing owned by other landlords and rents in free-sector housing both increased by 3.3 percent. In all three categories, the rents increased more than last year.

KLM ground crew workers are on strike between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. this morning. During that time, KLM will take no hold baggage on board. The airline also canceled a total of 16 flights - nine departures and seven arrivals. All canceled flights are flights within Europe, according to flight information from Schiphol.

In the first half of this year, the Dutch police registered 5,113 cases of aggression and violence against police officers. These figures are usually released on an annual basis, but the police decided to release provisional figures at the media's request after four cops were injured during arrests in Rotterdam over the weekend, NOS reports.

Public transport prices in the Netherlands increased more over the past decade that the costs involved in driving your own car, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. In July of this year, public transit prices were 30 percent higher than in 2009. Personal car costs increased by 25 percent in this same period. For comparison, consumer products and -services prices increased by 18 percent in this period. 

In the Netherlands, the amount of money spent on car costs is 10 times higher than that spent on public transit.

Four police officers were injured in Rotterdam while making arrests in the city over the weekend. One officer broke his arm and two others sustained bruises and abrasions during an arrest on Saturday. The fourth was knocked out by a man in a wedding procession on Friday.

KLM canceled a total of 11 departures and 10 arrivals at Schiphol airport on Monday due to a strike by the Dutch airline's ground crew. All flights are within Europe. 

The strike is happening between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. due to a conflict over a collective bargaining agreement. Union FNV wants an 8 percent wage increase over two years, a less flexible roster for ground crew, and for KLM to give more of its ground crew employees a permanent contract, according to NU.n. During negotiations, KLM did not agree to any of these demands.

The partial collapse of the AFAS Stadion roof earlier this month was caused by the downward force of heavy winds. The stadium, home of Alkmaar-based football club AZ, will now undergo a renovation in which roughly 75 percent of the roof will be renovated or replaced.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will be held in Rotterdam, the song festival announced on Friday. The semi finals will be held on Tuesday May 12th and Thursday May 14th, with grand final scheduled for Saturday May 16th. Rotterdam Ahoy will be the venue, NOS reports.

When selecting the location, the organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest looked at the technical suitability of the location, surrounding facilities, availability and financial contribution from the municipality. Rotterdam emerged as the favorite.

The police in Kenya arrested the wife of the missing former head of Philips in East Africa, Tob Cohen, in connection with his disappearance. Cohen went missing in mid-July. The couple were getting divorced, NOS reports.

Cohen had been living in Kenya for decades. After his disappearance, his wife told the authorities that he went to Thailand to relax. But investigators have been unable to find evidence that the man ever left Kenya. He was reported missing by his sister in the Netherlands, who hasn't heard from him since July 19th.

The intention is for the experiment to start in 2021, according to the broadcaster. The committee that helped set up the experiment will give advice on the full list of participants on Thursday.
