The national Sinterklaas arrival party in Apeldoorn can happen without any blackface Zwarte Piet characters, according to the court in Arnhem. The court ruled against a lawsuit demanding that the municipality of Apeldoorn revoke the permit for the party because Sinterklaas will only be accompanied by so-called Chimney Pieten - Piet characters with soot marks on their faces instead of blackface makeup, NOS reports.

The Netherlands and eight other European countries are calling on the European Union to implement a tax on air travel. The governments of the nine countries signed a manifesto calling on the European Commission to come up with a proposal on this front, which will be handed to European Commissioner Frans Timmermans.

Internationally, the Netherlands has a relatively low percentage of smokers, according to figures from the OECD publication Health at a glance 2019 that Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday. The percentage of daily smokers in the Netherlands fell from 23 percent in 2007 to 17 percent in 2017, just under the 18 percent average in OECD countries.

To prevent unrest, the authorities must thoroughly investigate how an Air Europa pilot accidentally triggered a hijacking alarm at Schiphol on Wednesday evening, according to Dutch pilots' association VNV. Chairman Willem Schmid is confused about how it could have happened - multiple actions are needed to send such a signal from the cockpit, he said to AD.

A man died in a shooting on Putsebocht in Rotterdam-Zuid on Wednesday night. The police are looking for the perpetrators. The circumstances around the shooting are not yet clear.

The shooting happened at around 10:30 p.m. First responders tried to resuscitate the victim, but it was to no avail. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Witnesses told newspaper AD that the man was sitting in a gray Opel Astra when someone fired six to eight shots at him. Another witness saw a man dressed in dark clothes running away.

A massive response to an aircraft boarding at Schiphol Airport on Wednesday evening turned out to be a false alarm, according to the airline involved. The crew of an Air Europa flight to Madrid had already boarded 27 passengers when a pilot accidentally pressed the emergency distress button in the cockpit at about 6:45 p.m., the airline said.

A large contingent of authorities and officers were dispatched to the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on Wednesday night because of an incident on an aircraft. "We are currently investigating a suspicious situation aboard an aircraft at Schiphol," said the Marechaussee, a branch of the Dutch military tasked with protecting airports and borders.

The incident was a false alarm, according to airline Air Europa.

A lawyer from Enschede was injured in a shooting in Gronau, just across the border in Germany near the Twente village of Glane, on Wednesday morning. He was walking in the street when he was shot at from a moving car. The lawyer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, AD reports.

The police assume this was a targeted action against the lawyer. "There must be a relationship between perpetrator and victim", a police spokesperson said to AD. The man was conscious and able to communicate with first responders, the spokesperson said.

Many houses in the Netherlands still have lead water pipes and that can be dangerous for pregnant women and children up to the age of 7, the Health Council warned in advice to Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuzien of Infrastructure and Water Management.  According to the Health Council, more must be done to remove these dangerous pipes, and until they're gone, children and pregnant women in affected homes should switch to bottled water, RTL Nieuws reports.

On average, one day of parking at a hospital in the Netherlands costs 8.93 euros. Amsterdam is most expensive - at the OLVG in Amsterdam Oost, parking costs 48 euros per day, AD reports based on its own research.

The some 700 thousand holders of an NS discount hours card will lose their right to discount in the evening rush hour from 2021. NS is cutting various subscription types, reducing the number form 22 to 11, and the evening rush hour discount is one of those to go, NOS reports.

According to NS, cutting discounts during evening rush hour - between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. - will result in fewer travelers during this time and thus more available seats. Currently 1 in 14 evening rush hour travelers has a discount subscription.

From next year Eindhoven will follow the line of the Sinterklaasjournaal and drop blackface Zwarte Pieten from its arrival party, the municipality and Stichting Sint-Nicolaas, the foundation responsible for organizing the Sinterklaas arrival party, announced on Monday. But this year there will still be blackface Zwarte Pieten among the crowd of other-color Pieten at the party, Eindhovens Dagblad reports.

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Geboorte church in Hoogmade, near Leiden was severely damaged in a fire on Monday. The spire collapsed and there are concerns about the stability of the rest of the tower and church. The fire department will soon investigate whether the building has to be demolished. Local residents are devastated.

The Dutch government decided to build up extra stocks of medicines in order to prevent shortages, Minister Bruno Bruins for Medical Care announced. The extra stocks will be built up at firms and wholesalers from next year. This will cost around 25 million euros, but is expected to cover 85 percent of the temporary drug shortages. The Minister also announced that the Ministry managed to save 272 million euros for patients last year by negotiating the price of "new and very expensive medicines."

The Dutch cabinet announced on Friday it had reached an agreement with teachers unions and employers to boost government spending in education by roughly 460 million euros, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in an interview on broadcaster NOS. Two people from the Netherlands were killed in a robbery in Marloth Park, a holiday town situated in the South African Province of Mpumalanga, on Wednesday afternoon. Local media identify the victims as a 53-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman. They suffocated after being tied up and gagged by the robbers.

Police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi told News24 that a family of three and a visitor were in the house in Marloth Park when two men approached them asking for work. When the family said they had no work available, they were ambushed.

Two Dutch women and three children escaped a Syrian prison camp in Al Hol and reported to the Dutch embassy in the Turkish capital of Ankara with a request to return to the Netherlands, the government said in a letter to parliament on Thursday. "The women and children are currently in Turkish detention, awaiting prosecution and/or deportation by the Turkish authorities", the government wrote, NU.nl reports.

Amsterdam Zuidas is unreachable by train or car today and through the weekend. People planning to go to Zuidas on Friday are urgently advised not to do so unless absolutely necessary.

The installation of a massive rooftop for the new passenger tunnel from Amsterdam Zuid station across the A10 South and the railway means that car and truck access will be severely limited during the 79-hour period, with no trains running at the area's train stations on Friday and Saturday.

Action group Kick Out Zwarte Piet is planning to protest in twelve different cities in November against the use of blackface makeup and costuming often adorned by white actors portraying Sinterklaas's helper. The activists consider Zwarte Piet in his traditional form a racist stereotype. On Thursday there were protests in Apeldoorn and Deventer calling for Zwarte Piet to remain in the blackface costume seen mainly over the last hundred years, and which some say is adhering to Dutch tradition.
