The vast majority of Dutch municipalities are staying out of the discussion around the appearance of Zwarte Piet at the Sinterklaas arrival parties in their cities. Only a small number set conditions regarding the controversial character in the Sinterklaas tradition, NOS reports after speaking to the 120 largest municipalities in the Netherlands, three quarters of which responded to the broadcaster's questions.

The number of unemployed people in the Netherlands increased in the third quarter, compared to the previous quarter, for the first time in 5.5 years, according to Statistics Netherlands. In the third quarter there were 319 thousand unemployed people, 14 thousand more than in the second quarter. The unemployment rate rose from 3.3 percent to 3.4 percent.

The government can solve the nitrogen emission problem by making public transit a more attractive option with a massive investment, according to NS and ProRail. The rail manager and -company propose that the government invest over 20.6 billion euros in the railways until 2040, for dozens of improvements, AD reports.

The organizations want to shorten the travel time from Leeuwarden and Groningen to the Randstad by making adjustments to the Hanze line, for example. Train journeys from Twente, Nijmegen and Vlissingen can also be up to 30 minutes faster with specific adjustments

Limburg residents may well see the first snowfall of the season on Friday, according to Buienradar. And while it is wet snow that is expected - half snow, half water - the Limburg landscape may turn white for a while during the early morning, Buienradar meteorologist Marc de Jong said to RTL Nieuws.

So-called wet snow occurs when the upper part of the air column between a cloud and the ground is very cold, around -30 degrees, while the lower part of that column is still above 0 degrees. "Then the snow falls melting to earth", De Jong explained.

For years the Tax Authority ignored internal reports and complaints about the way it treats citizens. The service wrongly demanded money back from tens of thousands of people, without handling their complaints about it, and ignored former tax official Pierre Niessen when he reported this to the highest level, Niessen said in a letter sent to parliament, RTL Nieuws, and Trouw.

There is a culture of fear within the Tax Authority, Niessen said, resulting in his colleagues being afraid to report issues to their managers.

A court in Den Haag ordered the Netherlands to quickly bring 56 children of Dutch parents back to the country from Syrian detention and displacement camps. The case was filed on behalf of 23 mothers living in the camps.

In its verdict, the court noted that "the children have not chosen to go to Syria or to stay in Syria. They are sitting there now because their parents have chosen to travel to the Caliphate and join IS."

A group of six people was being held in connection with raising at least 200 thousand euros in donations, much of which was allegedly distributed to help finance terrorism. Four men were arrested in the Netherlands, and two were taken into custody in Belgium, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said on Monday.

Donors were duped into thinking the money they contributed was being raised with a goal of "providing assistance to war victims," according to the OM. Instead, much of the money was distributed to ISIS fighters in Turkey and Syria in 2013 and 2014, the prosecution alleged.

The Maas river in Limburg has been contaminated with a pesticide, making it no longer suitable to serve as a source of drinking water, according to broadcaster 1Limburg. Double the acceptable amount of prosulfocarb was found In the river announced the WML, the publicly owned utility that provides water for over a half million households and businesses in Limburg.

The contamination from the herbicide was first discovered 11 days ago. “We know for sure that this substance comes from Belgium,” said Koen Augustijn, spokesperson for WML, in an interview with the regional broadcaster.

A man died in a shooting on Putsebocht in Rotterdam-Zuid on Wednesday night. The police are looking for the perpetrators. The circumstances around the shooting are not yet clear.

The shooting happened at around 10:30 p.m. First responders tried to resuscitate the victim, but it was to no avail. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Witnesses told newspaper AD that the man was sitting in a gray Opel Astra when someone fired six to eight shots at him. Another witness saw a man dressed in dark clothes running away.
