Five years ago today Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, including 196 Dutch. The victims of this disaster were commemorated at the National MH17 Monument in Vijfhuizen on Wednesday afternoon.

The municipality of Hilversum held a small-scale commemoration on the fifth anniversary of the MH17 disaster on Wednesday. "How fantastic that you are here on this sunny day. Five years ago, the sun also shone exuberantly until the terrible disaster happened. A thunderbolt in a clear sky, that is the feeling I had when we heard that it had been shot down", Hilversum mayor Pieter Broertjes said at the commemoration, NOS reports.

The Eurovision Song Competition next year will be held either in Rotterdam or Maastricht. These two cities submitted a substantively stronger bid than Utrecht, Den Bosch and Arnhem, who are no longer in the running to host the event, the selection committee announced, NU.nl reports.

At least six underage boys were forced into prostitution by two men in the Utrecht neighborhood of Overvecht  over the past years, the Public Prosecution Service confirmed to NU.nl after a report in De Telegraaf. Not all of the suspects' victims have been identified yet, and there may be hundreds of victims, the newspapers write.

Last year 8.5 percent of Dutch internet users aged 12 years or older fell victim to cybercrime. That amounts to 1.2 million Dutch victims, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday based on a study performed in collaboration with the police. Young people fell victim most often. And the most common type of cyber crime was crime against property - crime in which the perpetrator stole money from the victim, according to the stats office.

Wednesday marks five years since the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) over conflict-hit Ukraine on 17 July 2014.

MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, with 283 passengers, including 80 children, and 15 crew members on board.

The discovery of an explosive, presumably a hand grenade, triggered the evacuation of the Botermarkt in Haarlem on Monday. The square was closed off for several hours while the Ministry of Defense's explosive clearance service removed the explosive to detonate it elsewhere, the police said on Twitter.

The police responded to the scene at around 8:30 a.m. The square was released again at around 11:00 a.m., according to newspaper AD.

While the week is starting out chilly with occasional showers, the weather will turn more summery from Wednesday, Buienradar expects. Maximums will start climbing from Wednesday, reaching a summery 27 degrees Celsius by Friday. And while the clouds will not disappear completely, there will be more sunshine.

"It will not be radiantly sunny", meteorologist Arjan Willemse of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. "Cloud fields will keep coming, but it will certainly be a lot more summery than now."

A 12-year-old Dutch boy with no ticket and no boarding pass managed to board a British Airways plane to Los Angeles at Heathrow Airport in London on Sunday afternoon. He was caught out shortly before the plane took off, when a stewardess asked to see his ticket so she could show him to his seat, The Telegraph reports.

School's out for summer in northern Netherlands on Friday and that means crowded airports and busy roads. Friday is a peak day for both departures and arrivals at Schiphol, and the airport is therefore expected to be very busy. Sunday is another peak day for departures, according to the airport. 

After Friday, the arrivals at Schiphol will taper off somewhat. Saturday's departures is also expected to be very busy.

Children of Dutch jihadists will be placed in a special shelter when they return to the Netherlands. There they will be observed and counseled 24 hours per day to determine whether they pose a danger to society, newspaper AD reported on Friday.

According to the newspaper, older children will be placed in this shelter, where they will be kept isolated - they will not stay with other children. Kids under the age of 9 will also be examined and their mental state assessed upon their return to the Netherlands, NU.nl writes.

After months of negotiations, the coalition parties reached an agreement on how to arrange custody for families with more than two parents and surrogacy by law. Dutch kids will soon be able to legally have up to four parents, and the rights of surrogates and the parents who use them will be laid down in law, RTL Nieuws reports based on a draft letter to parliament in its possession. 

The Council of Ministers will discuss the proposal on Friday.

On Thursday the court in Amsterdam sentenced six people to up to four years in prison for their involvement in the abduction of then 2-year-old Insiya Hemani from her grandmother's Amsterdam apartment in 2016. The court considered it proven that, ordered by the girl's father, these six people helped to violently take Insiya away from her mother, NU.nl reports.

In some cases this involves private conversations that were accidentally recorded by the assistant, according to around a thousand audio clips a Belgian employee who listens to audio clips for Google shared with Belgian VRT and Dutch NOS. A 42-year-old woman was stabbed to death on the street in Kerkrade on Wednesday afternoon. A 52-year-old man was arrested in Heerlen after a three-hour manhunt. The victim is known as 'Aunt Reagan' in the neighborhood, and the suspect is her ex who has been stalking her for some time, local residents told the Telegraaf.

Ukraine and Canada have joined a lawsuit relatives of people killed in the MH17 disaster filed against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights, Sander de Lang, one of the lawyers representing relatives in this case, confirmed to NU.nl after a report in AD.

The surviving relatives filed the complaint against Russia in 2016, holding the country liable for downing the Malaysia Airlines flight over eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014. On April 4th, the European Court of Human Rights announced that it would handle the complaint.

On Friday the Dutch government will announce a nationwide ban on the strongest consumer fireworks - fireworks that fall in the so-called third category like strips and rolls of firecrackers, sources in The Hague told broadcaster NOS. Both the fireworks sector and the police are dissatisfied with the ban. 

The ban will take effect from New Year's 2020-2021, according to the broadcaster. Category three fireworks, which form only a small share of the Dutch market, are already banned in Belgium and Germany.

Victims of rape or sexual assault in the Netherlands are increasingly willing to seek aid shortly after they were attacked. Last year the center for helping victims of sexual violence CSG received almost 50 percent more acute reports - reports made within seven days of the assault or rape - than the year before, NOS reports.
