In the third quarter of this year 13,100 housing construction permits were issued, 24 percent less than in the same period last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released. This is the third consecutive quarter in which fewer permits were issued than a year earlier. 

Up to and including September, a total of 40 thousand construction permits were issued to build new homes. For comparison, throughout all of 2018 a total of 70 thousand housing construction permits were issued.

Police in Haarlem evacuated the popular Grote Markt area on Wednesday after an apparent hand grenade was left on the stairs at City Hall. The suspicious device was removed by explosives experts, police said just after 5 p.m.

Amsterdam police investigating the murder of criminal defense attorney Derk Wiersum have arrested another man on suspicion of involvement in Wiersum's slaying. The suspect, identified by AD as a nephew of alleged crime boss Ridouan Taghi, is the third person police picked up this week as part of the case.

General hospitals throughout the Netherlands are running on so-called Sunday service today as hospital workers strike for better employment conditions. Only emergency care will still be provided. According to the trade unions, around 75 percent of all general hospital employees will strike at 119 locations.

The university hospitals are not participating in this strike, because they fall under a different collective bargaining agreement.

Police officers in Rotterdam shot a man in an apartment in IJsselmonde on Tuesday night, the police said in a statement. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The police responded to an apartment building on Chinese Tuin at around 10:30 p.m. after receiving a noise complaint. About 20 minutes later, a trauma helicopter and two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

The man approached the officers aggressively and "threateningly", police said in a statement. "They were forced to shoot."

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire Netherlands, except the Wadden Islands. Commuters are warned to be careful of icy roads and thick fog during morning rush hour.

Areas that had rain overnight will have a good chance of icy and slippery roads. "All traffic participants can be hindered by this. Adjust your driving behavior", the KNMI warned. 

In the northeastern and central parts of the country fog can reduce visibility to less tan 200 meters. Motorists are advised to adjust their speed and keep a safe following distance.

Dozens of people were found hidden on board a DFDS cargo ferry ship that had departed the Netherlands for England. They were discovered by the ship's crew late Tuesday afternoon inside a refrigerated container.

Authorities say the 25 stowaways were all found alive. Two people were hospitalized, and 23 were treated at the scene. The 23 that were in good condition were then taken to an area police station.

Police in the Amsterdam region said there were no known injuries in an apparent shooting that took place Monday afternoon. Investigators were still canvassing the scene about an hour after gunshots rang out in Duivendrecht, part of the Ouder-Amstel municipality in Noord-Holland.

The shooting was first reported to emergency services just after 3:20 p.m. on Monday, police said. Officers were dispatched quickly, as well as a trauma team in a helicopter and two ambulances.

Junaid I. was sentenced to 10 years in prison for threatening an attack on PVV leader Geert Wilders by the court in The Hague on Monday. The court convicted the 27-year-old Pakistani man of preparing for a murder with a terrorist purpose. The sentence is higher than the six years the Public Prosecutor demanded.

The number of young doctors in the Netherlands struggling with burnout symptoms increased significantly over the past two years, according to a quickscan study by care providers' organization VvAA. Currently 20 percent of doctors under the age of 35 have burnout symptoms, compared to 13 percent two years ago, the Volkskrant reports.

At 20 percent with burnout symptoms, young doctors score far worse than the national average of 15 percent and their older colleagues at 11 percent.

Multiple parties in Dutch parliament are calling on the government to intervene in mental healthcare in order to prevent serious crimes. This follows reports that triple-murder suspect Thijs H.'s parents unsuccessfully tried to have him admitted in the days before two people were stabbed to death while walking their dogs in Heerlen.

The first_snow of the season fell in Heerlen and Kerkrade, among others, at around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, according to Weeronline. As the snow was combined with rain, it didn't turn the landscape white and did not cause icy road problems. No more snow is expected in the coming days.

The last time snow fell in the Netherlands was on May 4th in Limburg. Last year the first snowfall of the season happened on November 20th in Emmen and Terr Apel.

Several people Including the head of radical nationalist group Pegida were arrested in Apeldoorn at the national arrival of Sinterklaas, the winter holiday folklore character who brings gifts to children. Police say that most of those arrested were protestors who refused orders to move to a cordoned off area for demonstrations.

Posters featuring anti-discrimination activist Jerry Afriyie as Zwarte Piet were plastered all over Den Haag late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The posters use a digitally-manipulated portrait of Afriyie, turning him into the racist caricature he has led a charge against for years.

Hundreds of posters were affixed along the parade route for the arrival of Sinterklaas in Den Haag. They were glued to storefronts and boats in the harbor, according to broadcaster Omroep West.

The police are urgently looking for 13-year-old Goiia. The girl disappeared in The Hague on Wednesday, when cycling home from school. A missing child alert was issued by the police. 

Goiia left the St. Maartenscollege in Voorburg at 2:10 p.m. on her bicycle with a friend. The two cycled together until they reached Laakkade in The Hague. There they said goodbye to each other and cycled in different directions. That was the last time Goiia was seen.

Last year road traffic accounted for 17 percent of the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the Netherlands, according to Statistics Netherlands. The total CO2 emissions from road traffic was 2 percent higher in 2018 than in 2017 and 28 percent higher than in 1990.

Passenger cars accounted for 62 percent of the CO2 emissions in road traffic. Heavy goods vehicles and buses accounted for 20 percent.

That breaks the Netherlands' trend of becoming more and more progressive, the researchers conclude, AD reports.

Police in Eindhoven on Thursday evening sent a team of heavily armed and masked officers into a packed and busy train as part of a search for suspect. Authorities were vague about the person of interest, saying only that it concerned an incident in Rotterdam, according to Omroep Brabant.

"We have just been able to arrest a person," police said just before 7:15 p.m. The arrest was made at the request of another division, the Oost Brabant division of the police noted.
