The Dutch government and businesses in the Netherlands need to work together to create a kind of national firewall to protect important websites and apps against DDoS attacks, five experts in digital security plead in an open letter, NOS reports.

Currently banks, telecom providers, energy companies and other businesses all individually hire security companies to help prevent such cyber attacks. But that is not enough to stop these types of attacks, the experts warn. If they worked together, they could prevent an attack one one company from having success at another company.

A large number of emails and some 3.3 million passwords of Dutch people can be found easily online through a special search engine, newspaper AD discovered on Friday. The emails and passwords of employees of manly large Dutch organizations, companies and government institutions are found on this search engines, including of organizations that fulfill a vital function, the newspaper writes.

Someone tried to hack the Facebook page and website of Katwijk political party DURF on Tuesday and Wednesday, the party said on Facebook.

For a short time the DURF Facebook page showed a post calling on voters to vote for 'another party'. Someone also tried to log in to the party website from different accounts. DURF doesn't know who is behind the hack.

"This is undermining local democracy", the party writes on Facebook. "It is unacceptable. This manipulation is a disgrace and a slap in the face for all the people who are going to cast their vote today."

A technical failure at ING resulted in 3 million transactions being debited twice, a spokesperson for the bank confirmed to NU.nl after countless customer complaints on social media.

The double transactions mainly concern debit card payments that were processed on March 19th. According to the spokesperson, due to the fault a specific 'batch' of payment data was processed twice. It is possible that some customers had multiple transactions debited twice.

The software that will be used to count votes in the upcoming municipal elections is still not safe. Hackers can use the vulnerable software to influence the election results, experts that examined the software told RTL Nieuws.

Ethical hacker Sijmen Ruwhof discovered more than 50 vulnerabilities in the software. He calls ten of them 'high risk'.

Banning cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is unfeasible, but the Dutch government wants to regulate the trade in cryptocurrency internationally to address the improper use of these digital coins, Minister Wopke Hoekstra of Finance wrote in a letter to parliament, NU.nl reports.

Hoekstra wants to bring cryptocurrencies into an "appropriate regulatory framework" without jeopardizing the technology's potential. He wants to make sure that the conversion of cryptocurrencies into regular money does not happen under the radar, for example.

The websites of the Dutch Tax Authority and DigiD were hit by DDoS attacks on Wednesday afternoon. As a result no tax declarations could be filed for hours, and people had trouble logging in to various government websites, NU.nl reports.

The attack on the Tax Authority started around 3:00 p.m., and DigiD was hit around 3:25 p.m. Both sites were fully accessible again by 8:00 p.m.

The attack did not affect the security of taxpayer's data, not even if people were filing declarations when the DDoS attack started, a spokesperson for the Tax Authority said to the newspaper.

Four in ten Dutch use the same password for multiple online services, such as email, social media and online banking, according to a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and Security. One in five said they use the same password for more than 10 different accounts, NU.nl reports.

The websites of dozens of Dutch municipalities and various government websites in the United Kingdom and United States were infected with malware that hijacked site visitors' processing power to mine cryptocurrency Monero. Over 4,200 websites were affected worldwide, NU.nl reports.

When mining cryptocurrency, the processing power of a computer is used to validate transactions on the cryptocurrency network. Those who make their computers available for this are rewarded with crypto coins.

The number of Dutch investing in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum more than tripled to around 580 thousand over the past six months, according to a study by Kantar TNS. "I can't remember ever seeing anything like this", researcher Reg van Steen said, RTL Nieuws reports.

In August 2017 a total of 135 thousand Dutch households owned cryptocurrency. Now it is 490 thousand. In some households, more than one person invest in cryptocurrency, bringing the researchers to a total of around 580 thousand Dutch who own cryptocurrency.

The Dutch police are calling on motorists who drive a car with a 'smart' key to deactivate their 'keyless entry' function following a series of incidents in which cars were broken into in The Hague area. The thieves were able to empty out the cars without having to break open a door or window. 

The 'keyless entry' function automatically unlocks the car when its key comes within its vicinity.

Foundation Halt and the Public Prosecution Service together launched an experiment in which young criminal hackers are sent to work at an ICT company as part of their punishment.
