Four major regions of the skating association KNSB have started lobbying against Icedôme in Almere. This was reported by Omroep Flevoland. They want the KNSB to choose for a combination of the proposals for a new race and training location of Heerenveen and Zoetermeer.

The regions of Zuid Holland, Utrecht, Gelderland and Friesland want the games to be held in Heerenveen and the training should be done in Zoetermeer. This would put Icedôme out of the picture of the provisional award of the KSNB, which will make the choice this week.

The Queen stage of this years’ Tour de France was won by Christophe Riblon. Froome gained time on most rivals.

Two times the riders had to climb Alpe d’Huez and such a stage will go into the history books. Riders who are not interesting for the general classification this year, have in such a stage a good chance to ride themselves into the picture.

Riblon in the history books

And so it happened that good riders who, because of injuries or bad shape didn’t contend for the first three spots in Paris, attacked fanatically on stage 18.

No longer is the second day the day that most people give up. Only 857 didn’t reach the finish on day two and that’s a meager 2%. Much less than the usual 4%.

The fact that most people give up on the second day is no longer valid. The first time this didn’t happen was two years ago. The warm weather of this year was expected to bring back the tough image of the second day but the new trend is set.

Vierdaagsefeesten

Traditionally the Vierdaagse started at the third Tuesday of July. A total of 42.493 participants started at the four day march.

At 4.00 am Minister Edith Schippers gave the sign after which the fresh participants took off. Although usually people might find it a little bit early, the walkers were pleased that they could walk at least a few hours in the cold morning air. They knew that the mercury would hit the high twenties, so most people were well prepared for the heat.

During the exciting finale of stage 16, Alberto Contador fell during the descent almost causing Chris Froome to fall too.

Stage 16 from Vaison-La-Romaine to Gap started immediately with attacks. No attacks from the contenders of the general classifications but from riders who desperately want to earn some money. The first break out was of a group of 20 riders where later on 11 more cyclists joined. This group didn’t make it and was caught after just 29km.

Jul 16 '13 05:19

The riders had a well deserved rest on Monday but they don’t think about resigning to the overwhelming power of Christopher Froome.

Alberto Contador admits that Froome is in good shape and that it will be difficult to beat him on the climbs. The cunning Spaniard however, thinks that there are always tactical possibilities and he is still in the race for the first spot. “Position number two as well as position number ten don’t count, I go for number one.”

The Tour de France is a tough sports event where cyclist can be injured badly. Stage 10 showed again the dangers of a mass sprint. Mark Cavendish and Tom Veelers touched each other and Veelers went down at 65 km/hr.

This years’ Tour is not different than previous Tours. Every year riders get injured. Broken ribs, wrists, arms, concussions and scrapes happen almost every day. With high speed the riders hit the asphalt and it is sometimes amazing that they are still alive.
