The Amsterdam police arrested 303 supporters of French football club Lille OSC at the Strandvliet subway station in Amsterdam on Tuesday for disrupting public order. The large group of football fans lit fireworks, used violence and walked on the subway tracks. By Tuesday night, eight of them were still in custody, the police said on Twitter.

With one swing of the bat, Kalian Sams secured a victory for the Dutch national baseball team over Italy in the one-game final of the 2019 European Championships. The 33-year-old outfielder belted a grand slam off Italian left-handed starting pitcher Luis Lugo that sailed over the center field wall in the fifth inning.

An error and a wild pitch preceded the go-ahead homer, and was followed by a solo home run from John Pollonius. Alberto Mineo’s home run in the bottom of the fifth was the last run of the game, setting the final score of 5-1.

The Human Power Team, a student team from TU Delft and VU Amsterdam, broke the female cycling world speed record a the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in the United States on Monday. Athlete Rosa Bas reached a top speed of 122.12 kilometers per hour with the team's self-made aerodynamic recumbent bike, breaking the old record of 121.8 km.h, TU Delft announced.

"We worked towards this for a year and now we have succeeded", Bas said about the record. "It is amazing to cycle so fast. I went faster than cars are allowed to drive on this road."

Dutch football association KNVB is stepping up the fight against discrimination and racism in amateur football. From this season onwards, discrimination reports will be registered separately, instead of under the 'border crossing behavior' category as in the past, a KNVB spokesperson said to NRC.

The partial collapse of the AFAS Stadion roof earlier this month was caused by the downward force of heavy winds. The stadium, home of Alkmaar-based football club AZ, will now undergo a renovation in which roughly 75 percent of the roof will be renovated or replaced.

The Dutch Grand Prix will happen in Zandvoort on May 3rd next year, according to the Formula 1 calendar for 2020 that was published on Thursday.

The calendar still needs to be approved at a meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council on October 4th, but that is normally just a formality, according to NU.nl. There will be a total of 22 Grand Prix races next year, including in Vietnam for the first time ever and the return to Zandvoort.

With a 2-0 victory over APOEL Nicosia on Wednesday, Ajax is officially through to the Champions League. Coach Erik ten Hag and the team are delighted. "It feels like doping", Ten Hag said to RTL Nieuws after the match.

The first goal was scored in the first half of the match by Edson Alvarez, with an assist from Hakim Ziyech. The second was scored in the second half by captain Dusan Tadic, with an assist from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Dutch e-sports squad Team Liquid came in second place at The International in Shanghai on Sunday. The Dutch team lost to OG in the final round of the Dota 2 tournament. As runner-up, Team Liquid won around 4.5 million euros. The winner walked away with some 15.5 million dollar, NOS reports.

The International is the largest game tournament in the world, with a total prize pool of more than 34 million euros. For comparison, the Word Cup for Fortnite in July had a total prize pool of 30 million dollars.

The Dutch women's field hockey team won the European Championships in Antwerp on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Germany. With the European title in hand, the Dutch women also won a place in the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year. The team and coach Alyson Annan are delighted, NU.nl reports.

Rabobank is no longer taking professional football clubs as clients due to "raised to unacceptable risks of money laundering, corruption, fraud and other abuses", NRC reports based on an internal message the bank circulated this summer. Rabobank employees are also no longer allowed "to take on new managerial or supervisory positions" at professional football organizations due to a "potential conflict of interest", the message said.

Ajax advanced to the Champions League playoffs with a 3-2 victory against PAOK Saloniki in Amsterdam on Tuesday. After a 2-2 draw between the Amsterdam and Greek teams in Thessaloniki last week, the one goal victory was just enough for Ajax to go through to the next round, NOS reports.

Dusan Tadic scored two goals from three penalties for the Amsterdam team. Nicolas Tagliafico scored the third. Diego Bisewar, the only Dutch player in Greek service, scored the visiting club's two goals.

Wesley Sneijder is no longer playing professional football, the 35-year-old midfielder said almost in passing when announcing that he had "signed" with FC Utrecht. In reality, the signing was with the FC Utrecht Business Club, which gives fans access to skyboxes, hospitality lounges, and special events.

"My feeling for the city is great. Now that I have stopped playing football, I want to have a nice place to share my memories", he said to FC Utrecht TV. The native Utrechter decided to rent out a sky box in the Galgenwaard stadium.

A report raising concerns about fire safety and structural integrity of AFAS stadium that was released shortly before the new stadium opened in 2006, was ignored by the Alkmaar city council and office of mayor and aldermen, former alderman Victor Kloos said to De Stentor. 

"We warned about it at the time. In the meantime, I have requested all documents, investigations and reports from that time from the municipality", party leader Kloos of OPA - currently the largest party in the Alkmaar city council - said to the newspaper.

The Dutch Safety Board launched an exploratory investigation into the partial collapse of the AFAS stadium's roof during a storm in Alkmaar on Saturday. Football team AZ is also conducting an independent investigation. The stadium is currently inaccessible, which means that AZ can play no home matches at the stadium for the time being, NU.nl reports.

While AZ failed to score a single goal against FC Marioepol despite having 20 shots, Feyenoord managed to score three goals in 10 minutes against Dinamo Tbilisi. The AZ vs FC Marioepol match ended 0-0, the Feyenoord vs Dinamo Tbilisi one ended 4-0.

Tom Egbers suffered a heart attack while on vacation. The 61-year-old NOS Studio Sport presenter will therefore be off screen for a while, NOS announced on Tuesday.

Egbers is doing well, but needs time to rest and recover, according to the broadcaster.

For the time being, his colleagues Henry Schut and Sjoerd van Ramhorst will stand in for him. Schut will lead the Eredivisie broadcast of Studio Sport at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. And Van Ramshorst will be the gest host of Studio Voetbal later in the evening. 

The new Eredivisie season starts this weekend.

At the request of Van Mil's family, the union will not provide any further details about the precise circumstances of the right-handed relief pitcher's death, technical director Tjerk Smeets said to RTL Nieuws.
