Dutch football association KNVB does not have to promote two football clubs out of the Eerste Divisie and into the top level Eredivisie after the football season was cut short, a court in Utrecht ruled on Thursday. The case was brought by the top two teams in the Eerste Divisie, SC Cambuur from Leeuwarden and De Graafschap from Doetinchem, which said they were unfairly penalized and that the KNVB did not stick to its own rules.

Former Dutch goalkeeper Eddy Pieters Graafland passed away at age 86 on Tuesday, his former club Feyenoord confirmed.

The Rotterdam club said they received the news of his death with "great sadness", describing him as not only a gifted keeper, but also a great cameraman and a welcome guest in De Kuip.

Eddy Pieters Graafland made his debut in 1951, playing for Ajax at age 17. He won the league once with Ajax and three times with Feyenoord, his club until 1970. He also played 47 matches for the Dutch national team.

Football clubs SC Cambuur and De Graafschap will definitely be challenging the KNVB's decision to freeze clubs where they are in the leagues, resulting in the two clubs missing their chance to move up to the Eredivisie. Both clubs have approached a lawyer to help them in their fight.

The La Vuelta will definitely not start in the Netherlands as planned this year, the organizers of the Spanish cycling race announced on Wednesday.

Three stages of the race were set to happen in the Netherlands in August, but the start of the race had to be moved to the autumn due to the coronavirus. That proved to be unfeasible due to te availability of accommodations along the route at the time, and the uncertainties still surrounding the situation around Covid-19, the organizers said.

The Grand Prix in the Netherlands and the one in Belgium were both scrapped from the new Formula 1 calendar, German newspaper Bild reports based on anonymous sources. Both the Netherlands and Belgium banned all major events until at least September 1st.

On Monday, the Formula 1 organizers announced that they want to start the new season in Austria in July, go to Asia in September, and then to America. According to the German newspaper, there will be two races in Austria.

With the delay of popular Spanish cycling race La Vuelta, this year's ceremonial starting point of the race, Utrecht, has been kept in a holding pattern. The event has not been rescheduled, though a popular rumor floated by a Basque region newspaper suggests the 23-day race will start in Irun, Spain, and not in the Netherlands.

The rumor was dismissed by Dutch organizers at La Vuelta Holanda, who told NL Times it started as a fairly innocent comment during a radio interview with the director of the Spanish race.

Social distancing measures in place to curb the spread of Covid-19 state that Netherlands residents must stay 1.5 meters apart. So technically, you could still go cycling or have a picnic, Dumoulin said. "The only problem is if everyone does it, 1.5 meters can no longer be guaranteed." So he implores: "Only go outside if absolutely necessary."

The players of the Dutch national football team posted a video on social media expressing support for the people of the Netherlands during the coronavirus crisis. "We're all in this together," is their message.

Captain Virgil van Dijk stressed in the video that we are all on the same team. "We are proud of our country. Proud of the team. And our thoughts are with everyone struggling in these difficult times," Van Dijk said. "Keep your heads up and take care of each other."

The Dutch football federation KNVB is planning to resume its professional football season on June 19. For this to happen, clubs would need to start training by May 15, despite the fact that football has been banned until at least June 1. The mayors of several cities with football teams were not in agreement with the plans.

The KNVB's plans are dependent on updates regarding coronavirus distancing measures in place in The Netherlands. Prime Minister Mark Rutte is expected to update the nation on April 21 over these issues.

The top football players in the Netherlands joined Dutch football association KNVB and ING to create an 11 million euro fund to help rescue the country's professional and amateur football organizations. All football play has been on hold since March 12, as the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the country.
